I downloaded and printed a cup holder adapter for the G29 here

The matching cup holder for the 1 Series is available on Amazon:

The printing material is a bit hard and brittle, so the first adapter broke when I pushed it in.

I was more careful with the second one, and it worked.

The 1 Series cup holder fits perfectly on it.

And with a water bottle:

Unfortunately, it doesn't hold reliably because the diameter is too small for the cup holder. A coffee mug would probably be more suitable. I'll probably return the holder, and my wife will stow the bottles in the footwell net again and serve me. The adapter is simply clamped and can be removed without leaving any residue.

If someone likes to drink coffee in the car or has a suitable drinking bottle, this is a good solution.

Only half the armrest though, you can flap the drivers side back down (or just don't open it) and it remains an armrest. Looking at the placement of your cupholder I assume you don't have regular passengers, because that would be right in their face, so the fact that the passenger side of the arm-rest stays raised shouldn't be an issue most of the time.

Cup-holders in cars are one of my must-haves in any car, and the cupholders in the G29 are perfectly serviceable to me. Maybe its just my seating position, but at 6'4" I sit as far back as the car will allow and rest my arms on both the center and door arm rests, but still use the cupholders daily.
