How to Wire in a Dash Cam (E85/E86)

Bought a 0806 + hardwire kit and installed it using this guide. Thanks Number5.

For reference, the screw for the GPS aerial grounding point is 8x16, ST4, although it's not very satisfactory using a self-tapper for an electrical contact and I think I'm going to tap mine out properly and use a bolt + locking washer instead.

Has anybody else set their dashcam up for parking surveillance? The 0806 is great, with the exception of the fact that the promised "parking guard" mount and firmware have never materialised!

i also have a 0806 and used this guide :)

i want the parking guard, how do you do it MrPT ?

i thought there was a separate mount to buy?

There is supposed to be one, but it doesn't seem to be available anywhere, hence my question.

Still... decent camera for the money!

Number5, great guide and thank you. Followed the steps completely to the book (well almost*) and success first time! Exposing the violet/white wire was fiddly as there is not much room or light in that void but your advice of using a scotch block (Maplins) was bob on and I only needed to strip back a bit of the plastic so it exposed some of the wire. *I soldered an eyelet to the black wire and earthed it around the screw. Brilliant, thanks again. It has inspired me to get my soldering kit out again to sort out the Intravee wake up mod!

I would expect that the micro usb is the power input for a 5v supply to the camera, and that the HDMI is an output to a HDMI display - for playing the video files from the camera.

Which cable did you use for this. It's not complicated really. None of the pictures quite show which one of the cables in my next base box you used to wire it in.

I linked the red+ from the USB Power Supply to the white&Violet wire. I thought this was in the OP ??
- Post some photos maybe ?

Thank you Number5 for your instructions.
I've just followed these this evening and fitted my dash cam into the Z4. I brought this 5V mini USB adaptor on eBay as the converter package was so small.
USBcable.jpg
But the length of the USB cable wasn't long enough, so the converter module isn't hidden away and instead is sitting above the mirror. But its small and fairly neat and not too obvious. I also brought this one as it has a right angled USB connector, but it angled the wrong way, which meant the cable had to loop. It was only £2.89 delivered, so I might by another with a longer USB cable.
Anyway, its in and working now.

That's very similar to the one I got - when I ordered mine they had them with 90 degree and 270 degree right-angled connectors. I didn't want to loop the cable and I couldn't work out which one I'd need, but they were dirt cheap so I ordered both - I still don't know which is the correct one because they weren't labelled

Sorry for bringing this old post up, but I followed the instructions and it went very well. Used the Scotch lock as mentioned on the purple and white cable. It was touch and go to star with as the crimp didn't cat has at first, but I pressed it down again and it worked well. I used a couple of small cable ties and a sticky sided cable tie holder to hold the psu in place in the coupes roof. Put some insulation tape around the Scotch lock to keep it insulated. So a big thanks and fingers crossed that it stays problem free.

I successfully wired in my dash cam with these instructions, many thanks :) Although I routed my USB cable directly up to the roof cavity bit as that was neater/more direct route than going through the mirror housing.

I used an A118C camera, quality isn't as good as the G1W that I had in my old car, but that was a bit bulky and I wanted something a bit smaller/unobtrusive for the Zed. And this is the USB regulator that I used: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130972209135

I attach a couple of photos to show the install.
