How do these mirrors work? And what is the best way to test if it is working?

Thanks in advance. :D

Go out at night time and your mirrors (rear view and side) should turn a shade of green when light hits them from cars behind.

Mine always dim the lights behind with a shade of purple.

Try a combination of covering the sensor behind the mirror as well as the one on the glass and shining a torch on it! :D

when driving at night compare the headlight from the car behind in both the side mirrors and the rear view mirror, the light in the rear view mirror should be significantly dimmer.

Exactly what i was going to say, it quite obvious when you use this method...

Do as an american visitor I had did in my X5 and fiddle with the switches on the centre console pretending it's a piano. Eventually you activate the 4 way flashers and you see the upset guys main beam behind dimmed by the mirror and not blinding you - true story from last week. He only did it 3 times on the motorway before I got real upset at him.

All of mine auto dim so not quite a proven method!!

EDIT: Sorry Z4 Beemer already said this!
Best way to test is to place something opaque over the windscreen where the wing mirror is attached (to simulate darkness).
Then shine a light at the small sensor at the bottom of the mirror frame (in the centre beneath the mirror)

Then it should auto dim :) I usually see it along tree lined roads in the daytime. The trees shade make the top sensor think its nightime whereas the internal mirror sensor can still 'see' daylight out of the rear screen!

easy... shine a light at the little dot that isn't reflective at the top of the centre of the mirror glass.... it should darken fairly quickly and noticeably
