How to retrofit M Steering Wheel with Multi Function Control

I have the retrofit cable, but would rather not take off the airbag etc again, because it could possible scratch the newly painted parts :-)

So my extra question is: Do the buttons usually work straight away or do you have to get the software switched on at a specialist or dealer?
If they should work without software changes, then I will probably need to put in the cable.

a) They do work without any software changes (i.e. as soon as properly connected);
b) The FL models do not have the cable, unless MF was ordered with the car.

Had to do the same to my previous '07 2.5si and did some research at that time.

However - though probably superfluous, as you already replaced the steering wheel once before - IMHO there is no risk of damaging the repainted spokes, as the airbag springs are released via the holes on the back of the steering wheel itself. To be on the safe side you could of course wrap teh spokes or put some cloth on it while working your magic via the holes ...

Yes thanks. I could not wait any longer so pulled everything apart after work :)
The cable was indeed missing so there are probably only a couple of years with this cable in place without MF wheel.
So only the 2004 and 2005 cars?

But I fitted the cable using page 1 of this thread and it worked like a charm.
Buttons are working and no damage to my newly painted spokes. The thicker wheel with the new leather feels very nice and the car smells like a new one again :)

Hi, would someone here know why the airbags lights are on a z2005 z4, even after replacing the clockspring? Also, the horn and cruise control does not work. :(

This is a great guide! Many thanks to the author!

For anyone else coming across this thread, I have a 2005 2.0l. The was was NOT there and I had to order from BMW. Now my 2nd hand M Sport wheel with controls works a charm, with aftermarket Sony head unit.

Thanks again.

I have problems to remove the plug on the headlight switch. Am I right? Any ideas? Thanks.
Yes.

Push in the black retaining tab (vertical arrow), which allows the white lever to rotate (horizontal arrow).

As the lever rotates, it pushes the connector out of the socket.

Followed the guide to fit the cable to my 03 3.0i with an m wheel that's been on for years.

Put it all back together and no buttons are working.

Tore it all apart and checked everything over, redid the scotch locks with new ones just in case and still nothing.

Is there anything stupid I'm missing?

Connect end with connectors into block under the wheel in 9 and 10, then scotch lock the other 2 wires of corresponding colour in the blue plug behind dash.

Reconnect everything.

What can I be missing? Could the buttons all just be broken anyway?

Hello, i bought the one new steering wheel with shift padles and multifunction and for me i think is it this same, like crusie control, my model year he had prepared harness for this reason.
Now i checked the conectors for steering button and am i right ....from my side its done from production ?
Many thanks for information.

EDIT: Thank you SideshowBob - all up and running.

For anyone else wondering, you can make your own retrofit cable using a couple of lengths of generic auto wire, 2 scotch locks and two female 0.75mm BMW terminals.

Great guide, thanks to all contributors. I'm 90% there with my M Sport MF steering wheel. My car is a late September 03 car w/o the MF wires. I want to make my own retrofit wires up, partially being cheap, partially struggling to navigate BMW parts catalogue.

Anyone able to say what wire terminal type is used on the end of the retrofit wires? I've had the wee green connector out, but don't have the right pin to fit and can't tell what terminal to order.
