- Iginition OFF (POS 0)
- Press and Hold the trip odometer button while turning key to Position 1 (Accesory)
- Keep the button depressed (about 5 seconds) until you see 'Oil Service' or 'Inspection' with 'Reset' or 'Re' in the display
- Press the button again and hold for approx. 5 seconds until 'Reset' or 'Re' flashes
- While the display is flashing, briefly press the button again to reset the Service Interval.

The onboard computer will record this has been done and the info extracted so be sure resetting corresponds with the appropriate service orr it could come back to bite you on resale.

Since the E89 doesn't have a normal key what's position 0 (off) and position 1 (accessory)?

Mmm not worried about resale then? Doing that in the UK will invalidate warranty and put buyers off if ever sold...

Sorry to dig up this old thread. My car has recently had it's first MOT done by my local garage (not BMW). It didn't need a service, only an MOT at this time. However, I'm not sure how to reset the service indicator to show that the next MOT is due next year. Can anyone help?

It's in your manual and the service indicator is different to the MOT reminder.

I've searched the manual but can't find how to reset it and yes I know the MOT indicator is different to the service one.

Well after looking through the owner's handbook for the umpteenth time and still finding nothing, I fiddled about with the car and finally managed to change the date of the MOT reminder to next year on the Service Info Menu.

Nope. As long as the BMW servicing schedule is followed, and only genuine parts (and the correct grade of oil) are used, it doesn't matter who does the work - the warranty will not be affected.

(Persuading BMW that you have done this this in the event of a warranty claim is left as an exercise for the reader. And, as you say, home servicing will certainly affect resale value.)
