How to remove mirror glass..

Just had a member ask me about mirror glass removal. Forgot I had taken pics when I swapped mine for folding and had meant to put them here for reference.

If you tilt the mirror glass fully downward, you will see the tab on the locking ring as circled below;

You need to use a screwdriver in the slot to move it anti clockwise to unlock and vice versa to lock. The pics below show how the ring works to uncover the motor lug mounting holes;

Thanks Mike, this is really helpful with such nice clear pics.
Are there any wiring connectors for the new glass, or the part behind the locking ring is what heats up?

Yes, there's 2 wires for the heater, doesn't matter which way round your fit then, and if you have auto dimming mirrors another 2 wires for that, again fit them any way round.

Cheers Mike :thumbsup:
I'm needing to do this job soon, as mine have started going very dark, and are turning black in a few places.

I got a set of replacement mirrors on fleabay that just snap in to the OEM housings instead of the rotary lock deal; the outer ΒΌ or so is angled out, they're plano instead of slightly convex on the off-side. Astonishingly cheap, they were, probably because not auto-dimming.

Hi Mike, slightly off topic and sorry to :hijacked: but since fitting the wrapped mirror casings I've found that the electric mirror on the passenger side no longer works, drivers side is completely fine. I've tried swapping round the contacts so it's not that. I'm thinking a disconnected wire somewhere but do you think rain damage could be a factor from when the caps were off? I tried to keep them covered as much as much as possible but with the weather we've had and the garage full keeping them dry turned out to be a little difficult.

Can't see rain being the issue Jay, as having the glass fitted certainly doesn't waterproof anything. Have you tried moving the mirror manually in all directions in case it's just partially seized?

Mike

I'll give that a go it's worth a try. I have had to move it manually to get the right angle and to be honest I haven't tried it since because I haven't needed to so maybe if it was seized up it might already be fixed! I'll have a play with it tomorrow.

Cheers!
