How to Remove Light Panel

OK, I want to replace all the interior lights in my E86 with LEDs. I can get at the footwells and glove box light units easily, but does anyone have a guide on how to remove the main light panel and map reading lights by the rear view mirror?

You need a store card or similar to slide into the edge of the fitting to push in some clips in the middle and right handside of the whole unit - the whole thing comes out, not just the clear plastic. Took me ages to figure it out, just takes a bit of fiddling. Don't use a screw driver or you'll mark the plastic and/or break something. Will post a pic for you so you can see where the clips are

As promised - the whole unit comes out, you can see the three twist holders for the bulbs :

The clips you need to push in by sliding the store / credit card into the trim gap can be seen in the one below - my thumb is next to one of them. There are four but you only need to get two to be honest, so use the long edge of the card, wiggle in and lever out at the same time, easiest to do on the side of the unit furthest from the mirror I reckon. There is a sort of hinge clip on the left hand short edge of the unit (you can see in the pic above) that you need to put back in place first when you re-fit it. Hope this very bad explanation helps you figure it out :D

Thats great, thanks! Are the bulbs in there the same type as the footwell lights i.e. 5w 12v, wedge type fitting?

They are indeed

Just had a look at min, its slightly different (dont know if this is because my is post facelift) but the cover is held on with two screws to allow access to the festoon bulbs, not this is after you have followed the instructions above.

took some pictures on my phone but they have failed to load with a catastrophic error,,,,, the pc's words not mine

Ok thanks for trying though! Mines an E86, so post facelift - I'll see whats lurking behind the panel soon enough.

Just need to source some nice, bright LEDs to fit now. eBay is a minefield with these bulbs, some are very dull and utter garbage!

I changed mine too... one thing to be careful with ebay bulbs is that they are no too tall for the center bulb... and that they disperse the light sideways to light the reflector... lots of LED's are directional forwards, so the center bulbs looks crap... like a spot light.

Weird - mine is a facelift, no screws. Could yours have been retrofitted with festoon bulbs, as I don't think they fit in the standard fitting ?

Managed to upload the photos

This is the back of unit with the screws

this is the front with the panel removed giving access to the festoon bulbs

Ah... Yours is like that as it doesn't have the separate reading lights that the light package/ 3.0 has.... I presume yours also wouldnt have footwell lights? :?
