How to open boot lid with remote?

Picked up my (new to me) first ever Z today, only driven it briefly back home but loving it already. It's a 2006 facelift 2.5.

Daft question time though - how do you open the boot? I thought you pressed a button on the remote and it popped open, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but the button on the remote doesn't seem to open it today although when I went to view the car before I bought it yesterday the owner pressed a button on the remote and the lid popped open.

I must be pressing it wrong or something. Do you need to unlock the cars central locking first and then press the boot unlock button on the remote? Or do you press and hold for a certain time?

Ta!!!

Good to see you are loving your Z4.

The button on the key only releases the lock, you still have to lift the lid up - it's not that sophisticated!

I actually struggled with this yesterday... i had to unlock the doors then press and hold the bootlid button, and it then popped open (but not much!)

Push and hold the button for 2 seconds or until it pops.

P.S I don't need to unlock the car first.

Thanks all, I take it by the replies that some are coded differently from others? Someone on a FB owners group said to me that you must unlock the car doors central locking first before the boot will open but some folk said that their boot lid unlocks and 'pops open' a cm or so without having to unlock the doors.

There may be some coding options but the tailgate would release using the button on the key on all 3 of my Z4s whether the doors were locked or not, although only a cm or so like you've described.

Shame they don't work like my E46 Compacts did. Pressing the button on the key the tailgate would actually spring fully open, or at least half-way open in cold weather! I miss that. :(

It is coded option, can be set to open boot when car is still locked or you must unlock the car first, the first option gives the chance of locking your keys in the boot of a locked car

I’ve coded mine. I have to press it twice.

Try pressing and holding for 2 seconds. If you press it too quick it might not register.

Otherwise it could be coded to only open if the car is unlocked. The e90 does this and I still haven’t rectified it.

Failing that, maybe it’s coded like mine?

You could always ask the old owner rather than a bunch of strangers! Lol

The boot release button -at least on FL’s- is programmed with a 1.5 second delay before opening the boot. So press and hold until you hear the boot release. It will only pop up by a centimetre or so.

Carly -or other tools- can be used to reduce this delay to 0, should you so wish.

Did anyone else keep opening the boot instead of the doors for the first few months of ownership, or am I particularly dense?

Sorted, folks! Turns out mine is coded so that I need to unluck the car first then if I hold the boot button on the fob down for a couple of seconds, the bootlid pops open about a centimeter.

Thanks for all the assistance and replies!

I still do that after years of ownership. Same issue on a mini with similar layout.

I have also locked my keys in the boot whilst 2 hours from home as I don't have the 'unlock first' coded. I'm hoping this is something I only do once.
