how to look after protected paint

Hi all
when i picked up my new (to me) car it had a certificate for a BMW applied paint protection sealant/coating diamond something
i checked at the dealers and they say it should last 3 years so i have two years left
is it any good? does it really last 3 years? how do i look after it? will polish destroy it?
 
You should get "special" polish with it anyway. That product is ok, and should last 3 years.
 
TBH these life time shines arent that good, It wont hurt to keep it topped up i think you get a kit normally in the boot but when it starts looking dull id get on with a proper polish and wax, it will look better and you can enjoy topping it up every 4-6 months.

Unless you use my protection methodology which does not requiring polishing, but is expensive of course.
 
The kind of stuff BMW use very rarely work, as with most things the product is only 20% of the solution. The real factor on if it would work is in the preperation, if you go to someone like Gtechnic, you get alot more than someone slapping on a quick bottle of protector and the back of a rag, have a look here on the kind of prep needed before a proper application http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/features/Default.asp?storyId=16837.

Have a look in the trade mags for the markup the dealer adds when selling the BMW paint protection on, something like 300% from the trade mag that was left in the dealers reception last time I was there. It's a great side line in profit for the dealer, it does very little for the car

The polish that you get as a top up is little more than a quick detailer, as if it was a polish it would strip any little protection you had as a polish only removes. So if you've polished it it's gone, the same goes for the previous owner. Also if you've washed it in anything more than Johnsons Baby Bath it's gone. The only way to tell if it's still there is if rain falls to very tight uniform beads, that means it was applied correctly and is still there. If not it was either applied badly in the usual dealer fashion, or has been stripped off through normal use.
 
Gtechnic is certainly gaining in popularity as to with Cquartz and nanolex.
These are more so aimed at being applied on a professional basis and do need many man hours to produce the goods and ensure a good, durable finish.
Down side is it reduces the fun of maintaining and trying new waxes/sealants etc.
I had spoke with Rob with regards to Gtechnic and becoming a pro user but have veared away for now.
As with anything, its all in the prep.
Giving a monkey the products would give very little benefit.
 
Well, it took two days to get my car done and when done properly, it is a perfect finish.

I do enjoy 0 swirl marks though.
