How to improve the exhaust sound

Hi all,

I've had a little search on here but there doesn't seem to be much regarding exhaust noise for the 3.0 E89.

I'd like to improve the noise of the car without breaking the bank as it's a little too quiet for my liking.

I appreciate I have to be wary of the drone that may come with it but I'm sure there must be a way of improving the tone/note/growl of of the E89 engine.

Any ideas or help much appreciated.

The resonators in your exhaust tune the exhaust note along with the muffler, which quiets the whole thing down so remove them it gets louder maybe go see an exhaust shop see how much they charge

Will do. Thanks for your help! :D

M3 owners use a mobile welder, Paul, he drops rear boxes and wraps sections of the perforated pipes inside them. He then welds them back up. Exhaust is louder by degrees depending on how much pipe he wraps. 2 pipe is sporty no drone. 4 pipe wrap is very loud, anti-social and drones.
He does other cars and I'm sure would work on Z4s. He advertises on e bay and is also on M3 Cutters. £250 up for exhaust mod is good value in comparison to buying new rear boxes.

Now that is interesting... Especially as I've got a used backbox for mine winging it's way to me for me to tinker with :)

Apparently this is some of his work;

Just bought a used back box for my 3.0, going to do this mod myself next week, just waiting on the stainless mig wire :)

Just had a guy on the phone saying he can do the mod for £180. He would remove the box completely and put in 2 straight through pipes. Not sure if this is a good idea or not???

I certainly don't want the car to sound like a tank! :?

I had a straight through system on my Z4M and it was far too loud. I had larger back boxes fitted and that quietened it down somewhat. The pipe wrap mod allows you to choose how much of the perforated pipe you want to wrap to become straight through. On the M3 wrapping 2 pipes increased the sound a lot. I think there were 4 in each back box as the pipe is twisted inside into bends.
Depends how loud you want it.

This sounds nice. I believe it's a straight through with back box removed.

And so does this.

I wish he would pronounce "three" properly, not "free", does my nut in :headbang:

Good mod, wonder if we can do that on the Z4 as easily?

I'm attempting this at the weekend on my 3.0, see my thread; http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=88783&p=1312588#p1312588
