How to get in neutral for an Auto

My car is broken after snapping a spark plug in the chamber trying to get it out, had already replaced 2 but the 3rd.. :headbang:
I'm getting the car on a trailer to the garage so they can work on it but not sure how to get it in neutral the park just stays on, saw some vids about using an Allen key to over ride the lock under the gearstick surround but this seems to be US cars only
So how do I get in neutral 😐 ?

Stays in park on ignition too, so the handbrake comes off fine but the P stays lit and can't shift it to netrual, even with foot on brake

If you have the newer ZF 8 speed then even if you can get it into neutral without the engine running (which I couldn't on my 4 series) it will go back into Park as soon as the ignition is turned off.

I remember it being a pain because I couldn't turn the rear wheels on the jack. More of a pain for the OP. Guessing it needs plugging in to put into 'service' mode?? :?

Mine is the 8 speed auto, just reading some more and it's very confusing on what is possible, only thing I can find is that there is a special bolt you put in from underneath the car to get it to neutral.

Here you go..if the car’s electronics are still working here’s how to do it…you need to pull the fuse in these instructions…good news one cylinder won’t fire anyway .. :tumbleweed:

Thank you so much for that info, so basically you start the car with the fuse out for the fuel pump.

So gutted this has happened, think the plugs have been in there for a long time going by the other 2 I had changed before this one gave way

Next question sorry, so I know where the fuse box (under glove box) but not sure which fuse is for the fuel pump, From what I've searched maybe Fuse 4 ?
Seen the fuse diagrams but nothing with text to say what fuse does what ?

The auto has been great but oh my what a pain if you need to move it without starting the engine

Hoping I won’t ever need to know… but is there similar guidance for the E85?

Which box?

ZF5 or 6?

It’s 6 speed so going to hazard a guess it’s the ZF6

Parking lock

The parking lock blocks the gearbox output shaft. The vehicle is secured against rolling away. The parking lock is designed in such a way that on upward or downward inclines of up to 32 a secure hold is always ensured.

> E53, E81, E83, E85, E86, E87, E90, E91, E92, E93

> E60, E61 up to 03/2007

> E63, E64 up to 09/2007

When the vehicle is stationary, the parking lock is engaged purely mechanically via the selector lever (Bowden cable from selector lever to mechatronics module).

just accessing the fuse box requires a lot of patience and cursing the designer, in equal amounts! Good luck!
