I saw this vid on TV years ago, followed by another episode on the Corvette factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky. WOW, what a contrast. BMW Spartanburg: everyone in uniforms, everything squeaky-clean and organized, workers installing undercarriage stuff on a rotisserie-type stand, ergonomically designed with the workers in mind. Etc etc. Then the Corvette plant - no air conditioning in the summer heat, so they throw open a giant back door with a massive fan to suck hot air out. Employees dressed in street clothes, whatever they want to show up in. Slap-dash looking assembly procedures. It was really eye-opening and interesting to compare the 2 factories. And Chevy did NOT come away looking good. At all.

Brilliant link - thanks OP.

Very informative too, particularly the engine construction. But I hope I never hear anyone say "Zee4" ever again. :headbang:

But it was a bit longer than I realised.

Being a yankee from the USA, I’m admittedly lost with distaste for the pronunciation “Zee4” :o
I’m equally courious with the European pronunciation “Zed4” :?

In America, the letter Z is pronounced Zee, so here it’s pronounced “zee4”
Since BMW is German and their letter Z is pronounced ”tset”, I would expect it to be pronounced “tset4”.
However, I always hear Europeans pronounce It “Zed4”

Im terribly confused

Don't be confused. The English pronunciation of Z is zed. We do the same here in Australia, so it must be right. Have you noticed how we spell and pronounce aluminium? Thats a whole other story.
