How reliable are mx5's?

Sounds great. You must be having better weather than here - there's no way I'd risk the top-down today!

Does the MX5 'feel' slow compared to your old Z4 or are you not really noticing it? Obviously on paper it is slower but some cars feel fast and others are fast.

It's definitely slower but it's fast enough.I only ever pushed the Z4 to it's maximum on two occasions in two years.Neither of them are torquey and both have fantastically precise and smooth gearshifts so it's a pleasure to flick through the gears in both cars.I know what you mean about some cars feeling fast as that describes my,much loved,1999 MR2.I think a lot of it has to do with modern cars having 6 speed gearboxes. The MX5 revs to 7500 and if it only had 5 cogs to choose from i think it would feel much faster than it does with 6.

My misses got a mx5 just like yours six months ago and she i very happy with it! There are however some good points 4 off and some bad points 10 off!

1. Plastic bits are a bit cheap.
2. Not much space in the boot for the shopping!
3. It's for girls.
4. It's a girls car.

Colin P , bob on!

My wife had a great MK1 Classic in black. Great car. super reliable and great fun to drive. Totally bomb proof.

But at 6' 2" and 15 stone, I looked like a total plonker with the hood up and even worse with it down.

The new Honda might be a better bet? Two lads I know have gone for a 335d and Civic Type R. Both super happy but I love my zed.

I am 5ft 8ins and 11 stone it fits me just like a glove. The trans-gender op is scheduled for 2013 ;want a date?

Ha ha I can't even make my Zed look cool!
Its not a good look to have 2 inches of baldy headed git sticking out above the winscreen!

You could only come up with 2 negatives, first one is a fair one, second one not so much as z4's boot isn't exactly the last word in practicality, as for its a girls car, i know of plenty of well tuned mx5's that will make most z4's look silly so imo you're wrong :D

In defence of Colin, his reply was very tongue in cheek and he doesn't deserve a flaming. Anyway, the MX5 continues to make me happy;i've finally got used to having a proper handbrake again and it's a pleasure. The first three days i kept activating the electric window switches which are where the E89's electronic handbrake button was  Washed it at the weekend and could not find a single stone chip.My E89 had picked up it's first,of many, stone chips in the first day of ownership despite trying to leave loads of space to the car in front.I know silver is a much more forgiving colour than black but i studied it carefully.
Today was spent trawling the web for bits i can add and the choices are endless;the E89 has so few after market items it's depressing.Stubby ordered and am now considering an induction kit.

Glad you are enjoying it - they are great little Roadsters - as you say the modding is endless and the owners club and meets are pretty good too

I think that is an exact description there. The car is a cheap car, and with cheap cars you have to accept the shortcomings of those.

I am sure you can only get them in flimper spec as well, so more comparable to a Z3 I would say.

Flimper spec !!! I got,as standard,Climate control,5 stage heated seats,Cruise control,Wind deflector,Bose hi fi,Electric windows and mirrors,Leather upholstery,Front fogs,Alloys and an air compressor that runs off the cigarette lighter to do your tyres with. :P
