Factory sais never. At the service they told me that the oil needs replacing and I have only 40000 miles done with my 2.5 (AT) Z4.

What do you reccomend me to do ?

If you plan on keeping the car for a while, then replace your automatic transmission fluid/filter and since you are having that done have the differential fluid replaced also. Do it again at 70K.
Even at 40K, you will notice a improvement in its shifting and you will get all the transmission killing (not joking) dirt out of the tranny.

Scanning the other BMW boards, I find that if you do the 'lifetime' fill sequence, your automatic transmission will die anytime around 80K and 120K and at about $5000 to replace, changing it now is great insurance.

I bought my Zed when it had 45K on it. I replaced both the AT and differential fluids at 50K and will do it again at 75K.

What do you guys think about changing the manual gearbox oil? I've noticed mine is not as slick changing as I'd like. In TVR land we change all fluids - gearbox, diff, coolant, brake fluids every 12k.

I changed my 6 speed's oil at 50,000 Kms. The factory stuff that was in there came out black. I don't know what colour it was when it went in. I replaced it with Redline, which made a noticable improvement in shifting. Make sure you use the correct oil - the 6 speed manual uses ATF.

I did the differential at the same time and plan on doing them both again every 50,000 Kms.

I'm not sure in which model year it happened, but newer manual transmissions no longer have a drain plug. If you want to change the "lifetime" oil you have to suck it out of the filler hole!
