How Much!!!!!

I've just turned my car over to check that the battery has not gone flat and thought i would try and defrost it at the same time. The wing mirrors are heated and the drivers side has just cracked and turned yellow either side of the crack. The yellow is something to do with the chemical inside the mirror which enables the anti dazzle feature. I rang BMW Liverpool parts department and they have just quoted me £276.01 including vat for a replacement piece of glass, not the whole mirror just the glass, and £23.50 including VAT to fit it.

Can anyone please point me in the direction of a cheaper source for an identical replacement.

tell them u want it free of charge as the car is under warrenty and therefore sholud stand up to extremes of temp

I was going to mention that... surely there's an argument that its a manufacturing defect if its cracked when warming up?

I have just phoned the service department and they have booked the car in for next Thursday to have a look at the mirror. Judging by the tone of the lady i spoke to she does not believe that the mirror has cracked due to it being heated. She also said that she has never heard of such a thing happening before. What's the point of heated mirrors if they fail / crack under cold temperatures. The out door temperature was approximately minus 5 when it happened. Surely BMW test their cars in much colder temperatures.

They do test them much colder than that, and if its a simple clean crack (i.e. there's no sign of a star along the crack which would suggest impact on the glass side, or chips at the edge where the mirror body could have been hit), then its likely simply a manufacturing fault. Keep pressing them, they'll want convincing its not accidental, but providing you're insistent, they should replace under warranty.

on our z's the glass can fall out at low temps- push them for a replacment- its not u fault!

Thank you both so much for the advice, i don't feel quite as bad as i did before now. There is no sign what so ever of any impact on the mirror case, and there are no chips in the mirror itself so hopefully the dealership will see that it's a part failure / defect. I guessed that was why they want to see the mirror first before agreeing to replace it under warranty, let's just hope they believe what i am saying and agree to do so.
Thanks again.

I have heard of these mirrors breaking by themselves, even the inside ones (i.e. not temperature related). On a M3 forum, one guy had to replace the leather of the seats at the front as the mirror fluid had completely eaten into the leather ...

yeah if their is no sign of impact then you can argue that it is a defective part and there can be no other logical explanation for it to break, or if there is then maybe then may want to explain it to you and the rest of us

Called into the dealership today as i could not wait until the 30th for a decision. An extremely helpful service adviser came out and had a look at the car and told me he saw no reason why the broken mirror should not be replaced under warranty. I am now breathing a huge sigh of relief and can't thank the people enough who replied to my thread advising me to request / demand the mirror is replaced under warranty. Fortunately the need to demand was not required and things were sorted out very amicably.
It's not been replaced under warranty yet as they are waiting for the part to come in, so i won't be completely at ease until a new mirror is in place and my bank balance is not affected, but i feel a lot more happier now than i did this time yesterday.

Great news, lots of beer money saved just in time for Christmas :)

Great news indeed, and there's nothing like using Christmas as an excuse to drink even more beer than normal.

Hi KSY10

if you don't get the service you expect and they expect you to pay for it when it's clearly a warranty issue, give me a bell and I'll pass you a contact at BMW UK to talk to.

Nice Car

Thank you very much, the offer is greatly appreciated.

I took the car to have the broken mirror replaced this morning, and i am extremely pleased and relieved to say that it was done under warranty.
I got there just before 8am and i was away by about 8:45am, a great service by BMW Liverpool.
