How much trust in your indy ?

This is a good one , just been having a chat with a neighbour .
He has a early Boxster , low miles owned a few years & really cherished
Throughout his ownership he's been taking it to a well known local Porsche indy in Bury that was called Porscheapart now 9apart
Anyhow it was in there some weeks back for various jobs doing on brake lines, discs & pads plus a couple of sensors .
He picks the car up when finished , pops it back in his garage & leaves until the weekend , goes our for a drive & roof isn't opening or closing fully without manhandling , gets home to give it a clean & a proper look at when a huge penny drops :o it aint even the roof he sent the car in with
Obviously he's absolutely blowing steam from his ears at this point & the garage is closed for the weekend
Turns out after much arguing over the phone that theyd somehow broke the glass in his roof & thrown on a used one they had lying around .
They then swapped the roof's back with a new window fitted but in doing so scratched his roll hoops which he had to have repainted

Interesting one. I was talking to an ex BMW tech that set up his own shop recently, and he basically said that if you are successful you need to choose how to grow. If you get bigger, size-wise, it's far harder to control quality - e.g. you'll start having to give Insp 1/2, brake servicing and other simple jobs to the most economical person available. But if you stay small and decide to put your prices up, then you are potentially losing out on a massive amount of "easy" routine maintenance work and really have to work a bit harder to find your customer.

I would imagine that the kind of thing you are talking about could easily have been done by someone worried about "upsetting the boss", who has actually ended up doing the worst thing possible - undoing some of the reputation that the boss has taken years to build up.

It's not just Indys. Berry Chiswick (BMW main dealer) returned my car with a broken window regulator. There were oily hand prints on the glass (with finger prints) that showed where the mechanic had used the window to pull himself out of the driver's seat. I had to mention solicitors before they agreed to rectify the problem. After respraying the front bumper they also returned the car almost completely drained of coolant for no reason I could fathom.

I trust the guy I use 100%, he looked after my 911, Swmbo's Little A Class and now the ///M, plus my friends Aston Rapide, 911 GTS and more, dead straight and sound as a pound, I'd never consider going anywhere else

Don't have a lot of trust in any of them, main dealer or indy. How much they can extract from you is rule number one, whether you are happy is at position 10.

My experiences so far anyway when dealing with two indy's for the old Polo I had for the children.

An old polo is maybe a slightly different kettle of fish?

I think Indy and Specialist need to be differentiated too. The local garage down the road from me was great for my old Astra, but it wasn't a 'trust' thing purely a cost based decision.

I don't trust main dealers with slightly older cars (i.e. ones no longer in production). BMW dealers will see a myriad of 320d's, 118d's, 420i's, etc. How often do they see Z4M's....or E30 M3's....or E39 M5's? I have no faith that they still know the foibles of the S54 engine....took Vines in Guildford two weeks to diagnose 2no. faulty O2 sensors...after changing one and not clearly the light, they wanted to swap out the exhaust manifold at my cost. It was only due to my protests that they revisited the O2 sensors and managed to rectify the issue. I also don't know who's working on my P&J.....an experienced ///M technician, or a spotty 16yo apprentice with picture cards to show him where the engine is.

For the past two years I have used Munich Legends and am very happy with them. They see a lot of S54 powered machines and from speaking with them they freely outlined what they do on Z4M's to check for common fault areas....something I doubt I'd ever get from an anonymous BMW technician.

For me, Specialists have to rely on reputation a few bad reviews and their business could be seriously hampered. BMW....wouldn't happen. An unhappy customer is unlikely to impact their workload....the hoards of non-enthusiast and fleet owners will just use their local franchise regardless.

The likes of ML, Iridium, CPC etc. rely heavily on word of mouth. I trust my indy as I know that their reputation and future depend on it.

I don't trust any of them - Main Dealer or Indy (that's ones I have used).

Having said that if I had a Boxster I wouldn't hesitate in using Revolution Porsche.

That's a horrendous story Andy. I've used my Indy for nearly 15 years and tbh it's due to them that we've stayed with the BMW brand for so long. I trust them totally and it's the biggest drawback of the lotus that I can't take it there.

Another shout for Revolution for Porsche from this household too :)
