How Much... M Coupe

I'd say £16,500 to 19,500 private and up to £22,000 from a dealer.
The Sapphire Black car you've posted looks in great condition... I think it belongs to forum member Rye?

Ha, i was just going to ask if you all thought this was too expensive :-)

Also, is this silver or grey... it says silver but it looks more grey?

Just had its Insp 2 at BMW and required no shims? Umm ok

It is quite common for them not to need any. When I collected mine I asked for the report and he went over to the tech who got t the piece of paper from the top of his tool box. It was a bit oily but had the measurements, all were within tolerance, some just but these were tight so not a concern.

Mine were fine as well

The colour is silver grey, same colour as mine with the same interior and mileage too.
It is at the more expensive end of the market but Sytner have sold quite a few for around that price this year.

Private / £15k - £18500k dpendent on spec + mods
Dealer with warranty / £17500/£22k dependent on dealer , spec + mods
These are purely my own thoughts & maybe different to others

I'd want quite a bit more than that for mine ...

Maybe, but its something I would be quizzing the owner on. Has he a inspection report, did he speak to the tech etc?

People on this very form have had problems with incorrect or inspections not being done properly. I also believe BMW at one point were saying they were not doing shim inspections in their set price, but I maybe wrong. I would be wary if he was "just" told that nothing needed doing from BMW without any further explanation.

The car looks tidy with a good advert, so i'm sure he is an enthusiast and knows how the cars need to be maintained and can hopefully answer your questions about service history, which oil he runs it on etc.

Sounds like your more concerned that the shims have actually been checked. I do think some dealers don't bother to check. If the cars sounds fine then they leave as is. Also agree that some have had serious issues just after having inspection 2 done. Can't remember if they had shims changed our not though.

On the S54 its imperative that the valve clearance is NOT tight.....

This shows that the valve seats are regressing and is one of the reasons that the valve clearance must be checked.

Tight valve clearance doesnt allow the correct amount of oil lubrication between the lifter and the peak of the cam lobe, imho this is the cause of the camshaft and follower wear that we are seeing...

Like you say,i would suspect many dont check if the engine is quiet but noisy followers is only half of the story.

Mine had Inspection 2 on Monday gone and it also didn't need any. Got a typed report along with the invoice with all the measurements.

On a couple of my exhaust valves they had the spec being 0.28-0.33mm and the actual being 0.33mm. I take it this in the upper range and not tight so allows oil but in your opinion should they have shimmed to put them in the mid range?

Yep..

Always aim for the middle of the setting. So your 0.33mm is on the outer range, but loose which is more preferable to 0.28mm

Guess we will never know...but i would have guessed 0.01mm of mid setting.

Its not hard to get to the shimming to 0.30/31mm and 0.20-21mm (inlet)... It is time consuming though.

Many just cant be arsed.

Next service I will get another inspection 2 done instead of inspection 1. See what's moved and make sure that I am specific in letting them know I want the valves to be set in the middle of the accepted range.

I did ask them to check the followers and cams while the head was off and was told all were good as well as getting the vanos oil filter changed.

I thought this is the main reason inspection 2 is more expensive. Could well be very wrong. Anyone know?
