how much is your ///m worth

Looks like i'll drive the M till its knackered then; on the upside at least I'm not bothered about putting mileage on it to preserve the resale :)

Seriously as someone who asked, you will/should get £12-12,500 easy from any dealer.

If you want a bargain, ask lotus. They offered me £15,500 against a 2 year old evora on my 26k mile Z4M coupe.

The deals are there if you're willing to work at it

Haha you should have bitten their hand off. No chance BMW will offer you that.

I would be surprised if BMW offer me 12.5k for my Z4Mc. Will keep it until I dont want it.

I live in australia, and cars here are bloody pricey, so the ZMR still fetches a good price here. about 30k stirling

ok... I was just browsing but this is doing my nut...

Everyone has a mate in the trade who seems to know everything...

Well they don't.

Nobody is ever happy with a part exchange value, because it is always less than you were expecting - FACT.

Lets say for instance you see cars similar to yours up for sale privately, it's easy to then set that as your expectation;

fine.

When the main dealer buys a car in part exchange they have to;
- Prepare it to network standards (ie. bodywork, paintwork, alloys, multi-point inspection components + labour 'cos technicians charge, and warranty 'cos there's a special division for that which needs paying too), this will usually consist of things where you would usually say "meh, it's not that bad". Plus any other MOT or servicing plans or whatever they may have going.
- Pay the network fees, for the pleasure of selling their cars.
- Pay the Sales Managers and administration (bigger team = better service = more money)
- Pay the Sales Executive their commission, 'cos they don't work for free either... :roll:
- ...I haven't even started on the charges for running the building (or 'overheads' for those who did basic business studies)

Now... when you stack all that up on top of what they paid for your car - then remember nobody will pay a huge amount more for the benefit of buying from a dealer in the first place - NOW it makes sense.

Don't be hood-winked by how much some companies offer above trade for a "part exchange". Companies like Vauxhall and Citroen are famous for it - of course Lotus will offer you an extra £3k in part exchange - that's just margin out the car! How much do you think the dealer needs to make per unit now they are nearly going out of business and they sell so few????

/rant

When part exchanging, think about it this way;

The dealer is doing you a favour by selling your car for you - and equally taking payment for doing so - when you are just too successful to have enough free time to do it yourself (or if you are just bone idle...)

If you want/need the full value for your car, you'll have to do what I get paid to do and put in effort it takes to DO IT YOURSELF!

Now pull your finger out and get to work.

its far too late in the day for this subject (albeit one you deal with day to day) to get to you this much? hard day??

but welcome to the forum :thumbsup:

get yourself to the surrey meet :driving:

I guess i could live with all that " the dealer is a fair guy trying to make a fair wage" crap if they didn't indulge in the practice of underwriting.

Underwriting is where the main dealer rings a couple of dealer mates and they get to give you the lowest possible bid on your car - a rainy tuesday bid....

I wish i could buy cars at the prices they offer - it seems every car you own isnt good enough for their stock - even though their stock that they bought at auction isnt any better than your car

It strikes me as lazy business - trundle to the auctions - buy stock - you can do it online now, underwrite all your trade ins - that way you get your customers to believe that their car is valueless and you make most money for doing not very much.

I do agree that doing it yourself is the better option - but people myself included have a ceiling of how much money i would hand over to a member of the public.
The dealer network is fundamentally broken primarily because the work of renovating your car goes to a faceless dealer on the end of the phone who blind prices everything at rock bottom. Because they are faceless, you cannot negotiate and the dealer you are talking to tells you that this is the "value" of your car - based on the fact that he has a rock bottom offer. If main dealers priced and took their own cars into stock - you would be able to negotiate better with him

Dealers dont get called stealers for no reason

.... and breathe ... sorry - rant over

Fair play Chris. You do make all valid points when it comes to the "motor trade".

Having said that, I have to work my nuts off working most weekends plus unpaid overtime just to hit target and make my way.

My car insurance won't pay for itself... :P

Im certainly not making a comment about the staff, just the practices used by the motor trade in general - my bro has been in car sales many times - they seem to work hard and not get huge salaries or commissions for units shifted.

+£80 for 12 months, but that also includes national roadside assist, legal expenses and replacement car which the lady over the phone kindly allowed me to negotiate all the money out of.

That also includes no claims protection :)

...and I'll take that as a compliment Chris :wink:
