How much at BMW?

My car has a full (I think) BMW service history.

I had an intermediate service at an independent (good one) for a condition of my warranty.

But in a few thousand miles I'll be due what is in essence the 75,000 mile OIL service after INSP2 at 60,000 miles.

I could also do with brake fluid doing (now 3yrs iirc), and probably get aircon regassed at the same time.

Will BMW be able to do me a deal on oil service, brake fluid and aircon gassing? Anyone had similar done in the past and have an idea on cost? I'm guessing about £250 ish if I get a good deal?

Dave

I was quoted about £35 for the air-con at my last service.

brake fluid quote was £100 :o went to an indy for that.

supplying your own oil brings down the cost of the service itself (by about £100 when I got quotes in Feb)....

BMW will probably want £200 for the oil service, £100 for the brake fluid service and £100 for the aircon gassing.

£250 all in sounds like a very good deal - I'd take it :P

I can do all of it myself, it's keeping the stamps in the book.

As per brake fluid, I did notice while INPA'ing around the stuff for ESP that the system can be opened up for when changing brake fluid (I guess some is inside the ABS unit bit!?), so thought BMW might be best doing that?!

Not had quotes for £250, but that is what I'll try aim for... the 4+deal sounds worth going for, as long as it doesn't mean they cut corners and do a crappy job!

Dave

I just had the brake fluid done by Coopers which was £78.67+ VAT. I suspect the biggest saving would be if you got your own oil. I couldn't get any in time so it worked out at £118 inc VAT.

That being said, these 4l containers don't help if you need 6.5l and don't have to top up. Buy 2 and it's almost as much as BMW anyway. If you're going to use it anyway though...

BMW did my brake fluid for £50 at the same time as the Oil Service.
I called all the local BMW garages and haggled!

Cool, it is sounding like with a bit of a haggle deal and providing oil might get the total around £250 8)

I'll ring my local tomorrow and let you all know what kinda prices I get!

Thanks so far!

Dave

Well, got a price of £243.75 or so for oil, aircon and brake fluid with them providing oil...

I didn't think that was so bad to be honest.

I'll just need to buy a small top-up of Castrol Edge (essentially what BMW use) for £15 or so

They added their 4+ service thingy to that, it was £311.96 before that was added!

Just had mine done by BMW - £300. Could have haggled but I work away from home and my good lady took it in so it's all ready for my return home in June. And that's where the problem starts, what do I go for first; serviced BMW Z4 or service Mrs J.....

Sounds good. FWIW, mine didn't use Castrol Edge, but Shell Helix or something.

Well, I bought my own oil (2x 4l Edge for £73)

Went to BMW.

Total bill was £223 I think.

Menu:
Aircon system clean/refresh
Aircon regas
Brake fluid change
Oil service (using my oil, ish)
Rear puncture repaired

So just shy of £300 all in.

Does that sound ok for everything?

They did a nice job of cleaning it too, and the interior smells lovely now, so guess that is the aircon system clean thingy, and the cabin filter too I guess?

One bugbear, clearly they had the alloys on to do the brake fluid so had remnants of it on the inside of my nice clean reconditioned alloys, so gave those a decent clean when I got home...

Also, apparently, they used their own oil first, then realised, then removed it (sucked it out, dirty?), then used mine. I have 1.5L left in one container and it's fresh, so I'm happy enough as it's there for top-ups as intended... I wish they had just left their oil in and I could refund my oil. Maybe they just took 6.5L of my fresh new oil to restock their big drum (they use Edge anyway don't they?!)

I'm sat here now wondering what oil I actually have in my car, if it's actually been done right, checking the colour on the dip stick, etc etc :D

Dave

What oil does the car need?

Probably of no use at all, but Costco do 4L of Mobil1 0w40 for £19.95+VAT. My local Honda dealer wanted to charge me £15/litre for the same stuff; I'm sure BMW aren't much different.

It uses 5W30 LL04 spec stuff, which is what I provided.

It's funny because they quoted me about £250-£260 before, + £15 for the tyre fixing, that is £265-£275...

I have 1.5l of oil left, so maybe £10 worth... so £275-£285...

The total cost to me this way has been £299 basically.

In theory I'd have been better using BMW's oil and buying some oil to top-up, than using my own.

I'm a little confused. I'll probably ring BMW later and ask what the price would have been in total had they used their own oil!
