I always drive through on the closing lane, but at a speed slightly higher than the car next to me. Never have an issue really, you obviously get the odd truck trying to create a rolling block but have not seen that lately since the police are dealing with them.

It would be a very good policy enforcement though if that Renault driver would get fined for what he did, at least it shows that those that agree that they are wrong as per the highway code.

I'm sorry but I must be in the minority on this.
It also peeves me off when I have been in traffic merging from two lanes to one and drivers come down the lane which is closing and push in at the last minute, I get in lane when its safe to do so and NOT at the last minute.

As long as people are reasonable at the obstruction is safe.

If traffic is very heavy then fair due's it can't be helped but to use both lanes to the end but as in this case traffic looks light so get in lane early and queue like everyone else and be patient. :evil:

Its no joke when you have made the effort to get in lane at a reasonable point, to get people come from a good way back and push in at the last minute.

both are knobs (seems like the new a class is the new c**t mobile at the mo) but hey it happens. people block, people push in. if we all merged alternatively likea zip then maybe but it is never the case there is always the one person who has to push past the person merging and then in just to get a few cars further up.

given that that bit of motorway ends pretty much where the merge point is at a set of lights in a massive complex junction with several main roads and another motorway i can see why the scenic did what it did. the traffic there will have been moving in spurts of 20 cars at most through the junction

Why leave the left lane empty - that is what I don't get. If they had driven properly there, both lanes would have been used fully and the traffic queue would be half the length.

i agree totally, I don't get it when people don't merge the way they're supposed to. The only thing the merc driver did wrong was to undertake so aggressively. The renault driver was an idiot for behaving like that and actually aggravated the situation and increased the risk of an accident happening.

Non related, but a second bit of highway code nobody seems to know is that when a pedestrian crosses a road and a car wants to turn into that road, that the car has to wait (section 170). Many arguments with taxi drivers that just want to run you over and have no clue they have to stop.

Same here, pretty similar to the middle lane hoggers - so many don't think they are doing anything wrong. Perhaps TV clips would help to educate those that do not know the rules.

There's also a chicken & egg situation regarding pedestrians and zebra crossings as the highway code says you must stop if someone is on the crossing, but the pedestrian has to wait for the traffic to stop before stepping on to the crossing. So how would you ensure the traffic stops if they're under no obligation to do so?

Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

The red sections above says you must give way to the pedestrian when they've moved onto the crossing -and that the pedestrian must wait until traffic has stopped before they move onto the crossing.

It most definitely does not say that traffic must immediately slam on the anchors and give way if you're anywhere near a crossing - which is what most pedestrians I see coming out of Brentford station seem to think as they run out of a blind station exit straight in front of traffic and then show their two-fingered disdain when a driver has the temerity to beep their horn after slamming on to avoid them.

Pedestrians annoy me. They have their own bit of pavement to use that vehicles cant use but they still have the right of way on the road as well.
Jaywalking should be a crime in this country.

Some very amusing posts in this thread. The Renault driver is in the wrong, simples.

We get this all summer long on the Tamar Bridge, do gooders and tourists file into one lane 400 yards from the bridge merge point and us locals drive straight past them. We regularly get an idiot like the Renault driver, thinking they are doing the world a favour, when they are just extending the traffic jam. :thumbsdown: Not clever but not worth getting upset about either :wink: , like the Merc did, :thumbsdown:
