How many miles from your 1st tank?

So, my fuel light came on today saying about 73 miles range left. Trouble is, the car has only done about 285 from new, so that seems low to me.

It was on about 7 miles when I collected it, and the tank was full.

The average mpg was on 30 the other day, today about 31mpg.

I haven't been driving too fast, and keeping the revs below 3500, although I have been in sport mode a lot, and had the roof down loads, but please tell me 350ish miles per tank will improve!!!!!

PLEASE!!!!!

Cant comment on the E89, but the E85s still have fuel left when the on board computer said 0 miles left.

Fuel up and do a calculation after you've emptied the tank again. Miles travelled divided by litres used to fill the tank, multiplied by 4.545 = MPG.

I get 300 miles out of a tank as normal, but then my car is a little more thirsty 8)

I'm going to set up a fuelly account for it to track it, but the figures have shocked me. I know it should get better, and really need it to! I was hoping for 400+ miles per tank.

How bad does the roof down affect mpg?

Seem to recall my first tank did about 220 miles, mainly down to lead foot causing big smile syndrome :driving: , The car already had 12k on the clock when I bought it.

Alas no idea for an E89, plus don't know what engine you have. Enjoy it any how and don't worry too much about MPG. You can always get a 320d for that.

Roof down will affect the figures a bit at speed.

Not sure about roof down really affecting MPG. I think it'll make a marginal difference, but not much more than 1mpg or so IMO

I'm sure the next tank will get you nearer 400miles...

Are you sure it was a full tank from new? Sometimes full isnt really full. My Polo does 100 miles or so before the needle moves down from "full", so I am always doubtful about readings from the guage

This happened to me too. Fuel economy went from about 30 from new to around 41 ish now.

It gets better as its run in more, don't worry!

Good job you didn't buy a 35i...I get 200 miles from a tank!!

Kevin

I assume you are talking about the dealer fill up - if so they may have filled to the 1st click of the pump rather than say the 3rd or so click when you fill up yourself. So may not be a full tank!!

Anyway my refuels so far are:
1st fill up - 331
2nd fill up - 356

According to the computer thingy I get 36.6 mpg after 1000 miles, expect this to go up a tad but not much. Didn't buy it for its economy though. :driving:

That sounds about right... BMW state around 10MPG better consumption on the 20i over the 35i for example. If the tank takes around 10 gallons or so, 10miles*10gallons=100miles more per tank. I get your figures minus 100 miles.

Its the 20i engine. Dealer fill up was normal Tesco fuel (closest to dealer and cheapest) and I guarantee it was 1st click! Intend to use BP from now on.

Knew the car would cost more to run than my 116d, but not having owned a petrol for years I was kinda blind to reality! At this stage I guess no need to worry, and if Carols experience is the norm, then I'll be happy!

Seen the link that Andrew posted, so will follow that thread.

Thanks.

I've done 999 miles and im still reading about 31mpg haha

Can a mod delete those last two posts, cos they are not what I want to hear!

My 20i has now done 1700miles, I get around 260 miles from a tank, mpg about 26. I also have a 320d M sport Auto, that only does 38mpg, think it may b a combination of driving style and my daily compute through south east london. However, my last sports car only managed 17mpg so the Z is pretty good, although a lot slower!!
