How many miles did your tyres last?

My rear RFT's ran 30,600kms ..... Got the Conti's on now, bought a BMW Mobility kit and they seem happy so no isues with warranty here.

I've been reading some bad things about the 19" 296's on rft's and this has worried me as I pick up my new Z4 next week which comes with exactly that combination. This post has put my mind at rest somewhat as I was worried cracked wheels were just going to be inevitable.

Slightly off topic but do you think the BMW tire insurance is worthwhile? (£29.08 per month over 1 year to cover them for 3 years for any damage, max of 5 claims and £300 max per claim).

Allegedly the 296 have been beefed up a little, so you might not have that problem, however I would certainly check the inside rim every few months on the rears.

My '09 has ran more than 37000km and still have enough tread on the rear tires without any 296 cracks.

When they put the Conti's on I specifically asked them to check the rims....no probs found. 30k+ kms on some not so nice roads and its an '09 . I read lots about the issues so I bought 5 years of wheel and tire insurance 6 months after I got the car. One rim is very expensive and when I got a quote for a rear runflat it was on SALE at $742 (BMW) and $645 (Indy). One rim and one tire = 5 years of insurance so it was a no brainer for me.

My conti's were only about $460 for a rear . RFT's are effing robbery for crap tires .

I suggest you get some insurance, burn the rears off (gently, over time of course) then sell the fronts to someone else as spare RFT's. I did (will soon :D )

Anyone need a set of fronts with half wear on them ????? Good for a backup spare in case the fronts are damaged....
I'll put them on Kijiji soon and see what happens, maybe I'll get a hundred bucks back

EdP... check the inside edge of your rears... I had tons of tread left as well but the camber built in the E89's chews the inside edge off, it's quite common on the Bmw's now. I was getting close to canvas on the inside and couldn't risk it with the distances I go and the unavailability of 19" tires in this part of the world... I was going to drive to Vancouver Island and back (2500kms) and the only tires I coud find were in Texas :( , so I took the Landy for a long spin instead

i just traded my car for 2010 z4... the car had only 4K miles and was running RE050s (18") .. and the first thing i did was to buy a set of non RFT continentals.. u cannot imagine how different the ride is!! ... still drives in a sporty manner.. but with very good levels of comfort.. and only slight loss of feel in turn in and much less noise.

I wd stick with the non-RFT again if i hv to.. the RFTs are just not worth the money.. and i do hv them in the garage just in case i need to put them on again ;)

Well 23k off my first pair of rear tyres but just had both rears changed at 35k - just 12k :(
Nail through one and a slight puncture on the other, barely noticeable but buggered all the same :x

Expensive day and not planned for :x

Mine had new tyres on the back when I bought it with 13000 miles on it, its just gone over about 24500 miles and needs them again. So about 12000 per set of rears - fronts still on originals and still a bit of life yet.

Thanks mcbeee...

Yes I do check the inside edges on a regular base because of the negative chamber angle.

I'll be heading for new ones in a few thousand miles thanks to the prior 296 rim issues and inner wear, otherwise I reckon I'd have got way more... I have to say tho David, that 35i torque is too tempting and my poor old tyres have smelled a little burny-rubber now and then ;)

Brand new Bridgestone Potenza RE050A

Rear tyres of my car after 10,500 miles
NSR

As you can see the second section from the outside of both rear tyres have worn out more. The treads of the second section of NSR have nearly gone completely.

New car warranty only covers wheel alignment for the first 12 months or 12,000 miles. But can I still argue for a free wheel alignment check before putting 2 new tyres on? Or are Bridgestone just rubbish and have uneven wear pattern?

So what is a good puncture solution if you get a flat with non run flats? Any issues with warranty if I ditch the runs? My dealer thinks it would invalidate the warranty on any wheel suspension issues

Not sure if would effect any warranty, but I would certainly ask BMW UK for a definitive answer.

I have 20k on the clock, still on the original tyres. I think they will be getting changed before the winter, though I'm a fair weather driver, most of the time, so who knows with this wonderful (I lie somtimes) weather we are having, it may be next year.

Can you have 2 new 3rd gen at rear and 2 old at front? Will the mix affect the handling due to different design and materials used?

BUM steer from Bridgestone UK........

Rang them again 2 weeks ago....
3rd Gen RFT will NOT be available in the UK for at least another 6 months.
Hopeless.......bunch of idiots.

Need to replace my rears soon....
I have 17" wheels and reckon if I go for NON RFT, I'll end up with a ride like a bouncy-castle.
We don't have any answers to which RFT is best for ride.

Believe that there a few comments here in the forum on the Continental RFT's and someone has just fitted the Yokohama advan RTF's with favourable results, all we need now is someone to fit the Pirelli P Zero RFT's and let us know.

TBH my 17" Bridgestone's are not that bad, no tram-lining at all but they could be a little quieter though, well have a few months to wait before I invest in some new ones.

When i picked up my Coupe last year it had Pirelli P zero's RFT's on the rear and Michelin RFT's on the front and the car drove far better than my Roadster which had the Bridgestone RFT's fitted.
I know i have 452's fitted now but that is because i had a punture in one of the rears which was unrepairable and since i had a set of 452's sitting in the garage i thought it was a good time to swap,if it wasn't for the punture i would have kept them on.

I think other RFT manufacturers have moved on in leaps and bounds compared to Bridgestone, iirc in think someone put a post up saying that Bridgestone are bringing out a new generation of RFT's but not selling them in the UK
