Where does all this discount come from?! It's been a while since I walked into a stealer and bought new.

Ha yep me too, only my 2nd new car ever. I went to Sytner Nottingham after ringing Stratstone Chesterfield 3 times with no call backs, asked Sytner to match broadspeed which they could'nt but got within a grand exactly so that was good enough for me. They only did it as it's a run out model. Incidentally the sales guy said there's no way his boss would go for it but they did, they still make a decent wedge.

Fun fact, there's almost 10x more Ferraris on the roads of GB today than the Z4M! Man I'm geeking out here :?

That seems like a stupid comparison... surely comparing the number of BMW's to the number of Ferrari's on the road would make more sense? Or the number of a particular version of the Z4 (Z4M in this case) to a particular version of a specific Ferrari model (i.e. the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale)?

The M4 is in another, totally different, performance league to the 35iS (and any other Zed for that matter including the ZM). The headline 0-62 times aren't that different but in the real world that extra shove is night and day different. I've driven the M3 version and i couldn't believe how fast it was. It's about 2.5 seconds quicker to 100mph but the big difference is the in-gear acceleration. It's as light (or lighter?) than a 35iS but has nearly 100hp more and lots more torques too.

There is no new Z4. When BMW decide to finish production of this model that will be it. At this stage I don't think they have publicly made any statement on when that will be but in the previous lifecycle the E89 had been seen in disguise from as early as 2007 IIRC (4 years after the E85 first went on sale). As someone else said earlier, the Z-strategy will probably be a Z2 and a Z5 involving the collaboration with Toyota.

I would'nt attempt to compare a 35is with anM4 in any circumstances, the M is superior in every way. They had 1 in the showroom, it was utterly gorgeous, but so far out of my league I'm not even lusting after 1  . I'll be more than happy with the 35is, can't wait.

I'm sorry, comparison? I said fun fact, that was a fact.

The M4 and Z4 35IS are very different and the M4 is over 50% more expensive in real terms. However I could have had either and preferred the Z. Money wasn't a problem, I just love the Z.

The M4 is an amazing car. Chances are I will have one next. But for me the Z ticked every box. Even the Lairy Orange one

I'll be able to get an M4 in 3 years, 5, 10.... Not so I fear for the Z4.

Gotta admit, one of my all time fave car pics... of any car, is this, the orange Z4:

That side profile is absolutely jaw dropping, I love that colour, I love those rims, the car is a masterpiece. I still can't get away with it from the rear though :?

Totally different performance league ?

Have you driven a 35iS ?

I find it hard to believe the M4 with a paper difference of .5 seconds to 60 is going to be in a different league

It's 431HP vs 340HP, however I imagine with the Z being a lighter car it'll give it a good chase. I haven't driven either of them so I couldn't comment on comparisons!

Yes. Have you driven the M4? If you have you'll know what I mean. It is way, way quicker. The way it blasts through 100mph and just keeps pulling you have to experience to believe.

Ncrossy - the M4 is (slightly) lighter than a 35iS. 1582kg unladen versus 1600kg (lifted from BMW website). So that 85hp and torques go a long way.

No I haven't - that's why I'm asking :).

Don't have access to roads where I can try blasting either car through 100 to see what league they are in

Wow, on face value you'd think the Z4 would be lighter although I guess the M4 probably has a lot of weight reduction provisions... and given nearly 100HP more and lighter I would have expected a greater gain than 0.5s to 60. But then again, 4.1s to 60 is still pretty lethal

Although they're one of the most quoted stats, nowadays 0-60 times are one of the worst ways to try to judge performance differences between cars as they're virtually always traction-limited so it only shows which cars have the bigger contact patches or better traction/launch control systems

It was different in the 70s & 80s when a typical family car got to 60 in about half-an-hour but with modern family cars boasting 0-60 times equivalent to sports cars of 20 years ago, standing-start acceleration just doesn't seem as important

This^^^

30-70mph through the gears or similar is a better guide. Or something like 0-100 - sorts the men out from the boys.

On the track tests it's 4 seconds quicker (for a 1m 40 second lap).

That's not a different league in my books

Both cars are in that bracket of "almost supercar" fast. The M4 especially. However the Z4 35IS with the roof down and the foot floored adds another level of excitement that the M4 can't. More importantly it's a level that can be enjoyed easily on public road, even in the South East. The M4 by comparison feels like it's doing half the speed it actually is and can only be fully utilised on a track. The difference in lap times shows that the Z4 holds it's own very well for a car that's carrying so much luxury and is not an M.

Lets face it, the M4 is an out and out ballistic missile. It's also incredibly luxurious and can be specified with enough toys to make the Starship enterprise blush. It is the full package and potentially the best all-round car money can buy. I think it's that good. The Z4 brings something else to the party, it's smaller, the roof goes in the boot, feels more personal, you are cocooned in the cockpit and the noise of the engine / exhaust is all around you. It's more fun, slightly less serious.

But we are (IMO) comparing two amazing cars, either of which you can't go wrong with. Unless of course you have a family of 4 and need a large boot :-)
