How many engine turns before it fires?

Mine takes 2-3 turns and never thought anything about it, might depend how long you leave the ignition in position two. Certainly nothing to worry about and I bet a new battery wont make any difference. I've just changed mine after a few issues but it still takes 2-3 turns.

I was having the same issue with mine, albeit an M54 3.0. Turned out the camshaft pulse generator sensor needed replacing. Starts fine now.

Went out tonight on the long way to the supermarket. Three turns before it fired I think. Hadn't been out for 9 days.

Without wanting to sound like another member, I will check the voltage tomorrow (after buying a multimeter!)

Just feels more laboured than any of the last 6 cars I've had. The Z4C fired on the second turn if the engine.

I do 60 miles a day as a round commute, so should get the chance to charge up just fine.

Perhaps I'm not driving hard enough having got 28.8mpg this weekend

It's a bit of a strange one to be fair, its recommended with the S54 to let the fuel pump build a bit of pressure for a few seconds before actually firing it up.
Mine used to be around 3 or 4 turns, after a new MAF it literally fires up straight away now from cold, barely even half a turn however long its been left for, takes me by surprise sometimes how quick it is. These engines do seem to have a few quirks!

Fuel pressure is held in the lines it doesn't drain back to the pump or tank., so you shouldn't have to wait to build up pressure...

As Andy says, MAF sensors can cause extended crank time.

Ah fair one, scrap that then. Thought I'd read it somewhere it was a good thing to do but probs just an Internet rumour
MAF deffo changed things though.

I would have thought a maf problem would make the motor spin more Every time it was started not just when the car had been stood. any thoughts ? :?

I should have said it fires up quickly hot or cold on mine now, but sometimes an extra half a crank maybe when hot. Without knowing the ins and outs of it I couldn't comment on why it makes a difference as such though.

Will post a video, but guessing I need a new battery then.

Mine starts just after you consider stopping cranking as something 'must be wrong'
Yes mine does that quite often, even after charging the battery.

If I borrowed a multimeter, can I test the battery from the jump points in the engine bay to save me taking the battery cover off? Sorry if this is a stupid question!

After driving & only being switched off for 20mins it fires much more readily, which suggests to me a tired battery losing charge slightly when parked up for hours. But I'm not very technical :D

Video of the cold start turns. Also videos a warm start but managed to not get the cranking captured, but takes half the time.

The dash rattle.

Have ordered 2 new crossbrace bolts for the bulkhead & it is booked in for the dealer to investigate on the 18th if this doesn't work. They were struggling to remove the vents when I dropped it in quickly last week, so are ordering new vent incase they break it

Just a thought, The ///M obviously just has a thicker elastic band, so quite normal for it to take a few more spins to wind That baby up !!! :driving:  :tumbleweed: :exitright:

A good 2/3 turns more than it takes to start mine & the battery doesn't sound like its struggling
Have you tried it from cold turning the key for ignition lights on , wait a sec or 2 then turn for ignition ?

Not tried it, but will try and remember tomorrow.

Have always been a twist & go person, but did think earlier this evening to try this approach out.

Have a multimeter being brought into the office by a friend tomorrow as well to check the battery over the weekend, but agree it doesn't sound as though it is struggling.

Are these changed with an Insp2?

If so, yes, if not, no!

Paperwork is in the office so cannot check :headbang:
