Pondrew's comment on paying millions in taxi fares for asylum seekers, that's just from the mouth of the right wing haters.
I think you will find it was a direct quote from the BBC lunchtime news headline story today. I know the BBC ain't what it was, but it's still about the best there is. The story was from an undercover investigation by the Beeb. If they didn't do this stuff, we would never know, as the Government are not going to broadcast it, are they?

Part of the same story said the Government had absolutely no idea how much these taxi fares (and the like) are costing the UK taxpayer, because no-one is keeping a track of them. But it's OK because it's only our money they are wasting, not theirs.

And all this shite will be getting back to the people in wherever and encourage them to come here even more. They supposedly want to dissuade illegal immigrants from getting on boats, then make headlines by giving them everything once they land. That's just stupid.

“healthcare that is free at the point of delivery” to be a fundamental right and a point of national pride.
Yet the cost to all of us for this, per capita, is amongst the highest in the world. And what we get for our money is appalling.

Definitely put our pensioners before immigrants and asylum seekers and never thought I'd say this but agreed with Trump at the UN.

Tim.

And yet doctors (and indeed most clinical staff) are paid appallingly for the time they’ve invested in training and ongoing professional development, not to mention the work that they perform. Which rather begs the question, where is all the money that is being wasted going?

Management, diversity, sub contractors for building work, cover for staff using foreign staff at huge daily rates, agency workers banking nurses and incompetence by staff in general

The term ‘management’ is oxymoronic, adding incompetence is tautology. Don’t forget PFI buildings with the mandated use of non-clinical staff supplied by the building owners.

I know someone who is 'middle management' at a hospital in Leicestershire. By his own admission, he spends all of his days on teams calls. He earns around ÂŁ130,000 a year. And he is just one of many.

I also know someone who makes, supplies and fits stainless steel equipment to theatres and kitchens, etc in hospitals. He works through another company who work through another company who have a contract with the NHS. If he charges ÂŁ600 for a job, by the time the invoice hits the NHS it is at around ÂŁ6,000. He is making good money on the ÂŁ600 too!
Some of these suppliers have 20 year contracts with the NHS, so can charge whatever they like with total impunity. All because the NHS are too lazy to negotiate better contracts and save some money.

The working through multiple companies is as the nhs only works with approved suppliers.

It has given me fresh ideas for my retirement though. I thought I had to become a train driver and work 2 days a week, but middle management as a retirement job doesn’t sound to bad

Oi, form an orderly queue will you! At least I have a better chance as I can claim discrimination against the clog wearing society if I don’t get the job

Well I guess if there is one thing we know how to do in Blighty, it’s form an orderly queue!

You only have to wait two days after which I call in sick with stress and never come back, but remain on full pay. I could recommend you as a stand-in though

That is another problem with all public sectors.....the old 'long term sick' brigade.
My wife's school (she works there, she doesn't own it) has multiple members of staff (mostly teachers) on long term sick. There doesn't seem to be anything medically wrong with them but they get full pay forever it would seem.

Add to that the rapacious cost of pharmaceuticals and the prevalence of legal awards against the NHS, which is essentially self-insured.

As for management, the NHS is the 7th largest employee IN THE WORLD. My god, it needs managing. I doubt it’s any less efficient that the Indian MoD (#1) or the US DoD (#2).

To @Pondrew ’s point, it’s very easy to criticise the NHS’s “lazy” procurement, but they are constrained by the public procurement legislation and don’t have the freedom to do it the way the private sector does.

It’s not that the NHS is fundamentally crap (it helps millions of people a year). It’s just too bloody big and ultimately run by politicians who (a) aren’t remotely qualified, and (b) don’t have a mandate to make the necessary decisions.

That's a little like the old Skoda jokes not really true these days, mind you, who would want to teach kids these days, enough to send anyone to the loopy bin.
