i have found an invoice dated 2013 for some ngk iridium plugs - car has done 25k since then.. what do you think ?

The whole BMW fetish with changing plugs and brake fluid for that matter is absolute nonsense in my opinion. I have a Clio with 103k on it with original plugs , I took them out looked and they are fine . There is no reason to change plugs on your car I would suggest . I would consider at 50k use perhaps . just my opinion after 30 years working on engines in cars and bikes .

+1

If you go to the effort of taking them out though you might as well check the gaps and reset if required.
Most people probably choose to replace instead of just checking them as once you are in there you might as well.

If they are not misfiring I would pull them, check for cracks in the ceramic, clean, gap if necessary (not possible on some plugs) and re-fit.

There is no telling how long they last, it depends on so many factors.
You have to inspect them.
Apart from the mentioned cracks in the ceramic, you should examine the shape of the electrode and ground pin to see if heat or erosion reduced/attacked the surface.
And clean them with a brush&solvent if you have residue other than the desired coffee brown haze.
They shouldnt be gapped. If you buy/bought the correct plugs, the gap is already set to the right distance.

I dont know tbh how spark plug life and brake fluid life are connected btw.
The condition of brake fluid can be most accurately checked with a refractometer (or otherwise the more easier electric testers)
And the higher the percentage of water in there, the less you can demand from your brakes as it lowers the boiling temperature.

I despair sometimes, firstly if being an old fart gives bragging rights I have been fiddling with cars for 45 years but if something new comes along like iridium and I have no knowledge of them it means diddly squat. Back in my day you cleaned and regapped them, now you don't I have been told. Back in my day plugs lasted 20k and engines were knackered at 100k and we used 20/50 oil etc. I am unaware of any fetishes with plugs and brake fluid, but it does sound very kinky.. My personal fetish is to service any second hand old banger when I buy it incase it was owned by a Cleo owner who hasn't changed any parts since Jesus was in short trousers
Brake fluid does deteriorate, and generally people completely ignore changing it, perhaps BMW owners and similar are more pedantic than other owners. We have discussions on here about one bucket or two when washing a car, it seems likely now that Cleo's get washed on leap years or religios festivals, or when serviced., or when God makes a personal appearance.
Plugs and leads break down and visual inspection often reveal nothing untoward but faults are nonetheless existing etc.
However I digress, my question was.. How long do iridium plugs last for ?

BMW say 100k miles.

I changed mine when I got the car at 102k miles and they were all original parts. There was no issue, I'm just like yourself and like to freshen things up, however there was no evidence they'd ever been changed. If I had a receipt showing they'd been done 5 years ago I'd probably have not bothered.

As always, your mileage may vary, this is personal experience.

Hmm, ok in a perfect world it's the usage rather than the age that's the factor here ?
Oil , brake fluid, tyres etc are age related as well as usage hence the question in the first place, as 25k is naff all in the scheme of things :D

Quite a few references to some bloke called Jesus and the fictitious sky being*. If you'd added the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus then it would have made the post complete.

Perhaps a fictitious sky being who created everything and, if he existed he'd have been a Muslim, son who didn't exist either would be more clued up on modern technology and could, if they existed, do a search on the Google (other search engines are available but can anyone name one apart from Bing where the results are not originally from the Google).

So in answer to your question, 40 - 50k miles for traditional iridium plugs or 80k - 100k for laser iridium plugs as per NGK.

* Other fictitious sky beings are available for worship including animals, Greek gods and blokes with multiple arms. See your local library for more information unless the Tories / British Labour have closed it down or do a search on your preferred search engine in t'internet. Failing that make up your own!

The reason I asked is that I'm getting a lack of blip, past the blip it is all fine, so really I'm looking for clues as to what it might be :ant: :ant:

Now look what you have done, you have started up my voices.
Hurry nurse, I'm losing the will to live :

I'll need to check what plugs I put in the car when they were changed at around 45 - 50k.

Think it was Bosch.

100k.

Incidentally, I did just replace a set at 100k and by the looks of things they did actually need doing...

You missed the tooth fairy, or is the tooth fairy real?

That was deliberate as there's been questions in the past on whether the tooth fairy is male, female or something else.

As discussion of gender could cause offence these days to any LGBT types and others who may or may not have a traditional gender type and who could be reading posts here it was felt that the Tooth Fairy who also doesn't exist shouldn't be mentioned.

So I'll not mention them, it, her, him!
