How Long Can I Keep My Zed (N52) As A Daily Drive?

Sounds like a great idea! Go for it :D

Would be nice if there were a section of the website which highlights these 'evergreen' posts. Any ideas?

I know a bit about website, but not that hot on forums.

Not sure what you mean by 'highlighting evergreen posts', however the search function works quite well.

I have created new Mileage Polls - one in the E85 / E86 Z4 discussion and one in the E89 Z4 discussion.

So currently you have the main section of 'E85 / E86 Z4 Discussion (2003 - 2009)'. Under this you have 'E85 / E86 Z4 discussion', '"M" Specific', how to and the likes of.

There could then be a new section. Within this section you could have 'evergreen' posts e.g. 'How many miles', 'current yearly bill', or the likes of... could be that only moderators can create these so it doesn't get flooded.

By evergreen, I mean they are timeless. So constantly applicable, or constantly updated. For example, you could have average prices for X model with X miles etc. This could then be voted on by forum members etc.

Just an idea. Might be over kill. I'm just thinking of ways to have something more 'solid' as posts can get lost and somewhat out of date.

Understood - I think you are referring to 'Sticky' topics. Mods have the power to keep a topic at the top of the list, so for instance FAQ's in this section is a Sticky.

Yeah I suppose something like that could work. Having a separate section might be quite interesting too but I'll leave it in your hands, as I'm sure these ideas have already gone full circle at some point.

Just, as an alternative thought. My Z4C is on about 98k, and aside from what appears to be a shagged wheelbearing, is going pretty strong. I love driving it, but my route to work & back is down many a bumpy country lane. And frankly, I'm retiring it from daily duties because it's killing my back at 28.

It might be you that's the reason it gives up, rather than the other way around. I do concur with those on here that say it'll be the body that kills it though - once the tinworm is in, it's pretty tough to get rid without expending serious effort. Do-able, but you're really gonna have to like the car for that to be a thing.

Very interesting indeed. From reading I get the impression the N52 / other BMW 6 in-line engines are quite solid pieces from this era. Nothing super powerful, but quite honest and hard going if given the right attention. Almost quite 'primitive' but at the same time built with 'German Engineering'.

Not sure I'd agree with that. The N52 really pushed some fairly innovative technology such as:

  • electric water pump
  • electronic thermostat
  • Variable-volume oil pump
  • oil sensor that detects oil 'quality'
  • Valvetronic (throttle control by varying valve lift instead of a conventional throttle flap)
  • 3-stage induction sytem
  • Magnesium alloy crankcase

..on top of the double VANOS etc which admittedly is fairly old tech now. Valvetronic has actually been around a while as well on other models. Even so, I don't really think there have been many significant innovations since!
