How is this even possible?

I didn't back into anything. No-one hit my car with a stick, or tried to prise the light out with a screwdriver (as far as I know). How on earth did this happen...

... and how much is a replacement going to run me? :(

2007 Z4MR.

It's a design flaw

The backing bolts were too tight and so a bump must have fractured it

I had that happen and it was replaced without charge since I was still within the warranty period.

Really helpful, thanks guys. That makes some sense!

Did they recall on this? If the brake light self-destructs, I guess they might have... here's hoping (not feeling the £100 that a replacement inevitably costs!)

Not as much as that, about £25 I think they were from the dealer a few years ago. Takes 3 minutes to swap over (but need a deep socket set).

I thought this was fixed by facelift time.

IIRC correctly from other posts I ave seen, they changed the springs on the bolts. I think white ones are about £45...

I need a white one(on my to do list) as my red one has a slight crack  -i thought white would make a nice change,i remember asking on here for pics of a monaco with clear 3rd brake light and i thought it looked great!

Silly Boy dont slam the lid,now look what you done. Check out euro-parts sure mine was £35.
