How independent is Ireland really?

Irish people can vote in general elections in the UK, and now they can also vote for UK in/out of EU vote as described here

Other EU citizens like myself can not vote whilst living in the UK, so is Ireland still considered to be part of the UK then ...

Ridiculous, didn't know that until now. Can't understand how or why they would get a say. Presumably it's because ROI was part of Britain until 1922. Can't see why that would count but it's the only reason I can think of.

But presumably they do actually have to be living in the UK in order to vote (I can't imagine we would send postal voting papers to an address in ROI or a commonwealth country). But then again who knows!

It's reciprocated. Irish persons resident in UK can vote in UK elections, and UK persons resident in Eire can vote in the Dáil - Commonwealth people resident in the UK also enjoy the right to vote in UK elections. Although there are rumours that this may change with a private members bill from elements within the Tory party...

Perhaps Dutchies should have joined the British Empire, rather than being too busy building their own Oranje Empire and getting excommunicated by the Pope, then pvr could have had his say... ;)
