How important are winter wheels and tyres ?

I've got a spare set of 17" wheels and four Wintrac Extremes in the garage waiting to be fitted to them.

No way I'm getting stuck this winter! :D

I've recieved a quote for the below - any of you guys tried / own these?

Kumho KW27 - £376 + Delivery
Falken-Ohtsu HS 439 -£382 + Delivery
Continental Winter Contact TS810S - £613 + Delivery
Pirelli W240 Sottozero S2 RFT - £735 (Runflats) + Delivery

I haven't driven on any of those, but in the past, I've had very good luck with Kumho. Ran their Ecsta on my 325Ci and would have gotten them for my Z4 if there had been any of their runflats in the US at the time.

Have had runflats on for 1 winter, then normal(summer),non-rft's/vrdesteins,on for 2 winters, and only got stuck in snow once, this jan/feb.
u need to take care,as asaid, leave plenty of braking distance, and adjust ur speed accordingly, but perfectly driveable.
I di have winter tyres/wheels for this winter coming, though. :driving:

What sizes are you quoting for there?

I'm looking at getting the Kumho KW27's in 225/50/16 and they're a good bit cheaper than that on mytyres in the 16". Seem to have decent reviews on the tiretest website, not quite as good as some of the more expensive options. I've had Kumho tyres in the past and found them pretty good - similar to the Falken brand in that they're perhaps perceived as a budget brand but are actually one of the best budget brands.

Hmmm, according to an older post by me, those KW27's are a LOT cheaper today than they were around 5 weeks ago:

Mytyres:
Kumho KW17 225/50 R16 93H UHP (£75.50ea)
Nokian WR G2 225/50 R16 96V XL M+S marking, N0 BSW (£85.20ea)
Kumho KW27 225/50 R16 96V XL M+S marking (£86.30ea)
Continental WinterContact TS 790 V 225/50 R16 96V XL with raised rim rib, N0 (£98.30)

I thought winter tyres got MORE expensive the closer we get to the winter season? :?

I might get ordering when I get home tonight...

Ah, that's not bad at all for 18"s then. I'm looking at £280 delivered for 4 KW27's in 225/50/16...

This might be of use to ranski: I just phoned the Kumho European Technical Centre in Birmingham to find out if the M+S marking is on all their sizes/load ratings of the KW27 (it's not listed as being on the 92V version in my size on the mytyres website). I was assured all sizes/load ratings of KW27 have the M+S marking - important if you plan on using these tyres in countries where winter tyres are required by law. Interestingly, he also asked my what car I intended fitting them to, and before I could answer said he was asking because the KW27 is a more sports-orientated winter tyre compared to other Kumho winter tyres. So basically it should be a good choice for fitting to Z4s.

Leave your summers on and enjoy a 'dab of oppo' at every opportunity , sainsburies car parks where my favourite 8)

Not got the balls to do so with the Noble yet

Would you wear your sandals and tee shirt in the snow? :D

Its no wonder we grind to a halt in the UK when the first furries of snow arrive - or in BBC speak "blizzards and Artic conditions."

I think that in Germany, if even if a no faullt bump - there is a part blame if winter tyres are not fitted.

@a11y

Yes they are for my 18" Ellipsodes

Yep, i think i will go for the Kumho KW27 - £376 + Delivery - carried out some googling and they appear to get the nod

I have just ordered a set of vredestein wintrac extreme for the M and a set of Nokian wrg2,s for my wifes
Honda Accord es gt,got both sets for just over 1k from mytyres.
Didnt fancy the M in the snow especially as i live near the bottom of a hill.
Have also just picked up a second set of Z4M alloys off ebay.

The wear on the tires is nothing in comparison to the cost of a new rim if you bang a curb..... don't worry about how fast a tire wears in wnter, the idea of winter tires is to grip the road and give you control. Your winters are nothing like mine but control is control. If you want to drive the Zed in winter, get a set of cheapy steel rims and some good "winter" tires, not all seasons, and you'll have fun all winter.

Well, I've now got some Kumho KW27's on the way from mytyres, to fit to my pram-wheel alloys

although I'm having a few issues with them accepting my payment . £70.20/tyre in 225/50/16 92V, compared to £86 or so per tyre just 5 weeks ago - and I thought winter tyres were supposed to get more expensive towards winter?
