How hot is your M running?

Without a water temp gauge how hot do you know your car is running? Been having hesitation and stuttering on/off blipping the throttle for a while now,one of the chaps in the local BMW club has a laptop with diagnosis software,plugged it into my car to see the fault history (lots there),then erased the log and went to another page showing the live logging and lo and behold on a hot engine my coolant temp was -39.6C. A little on the low side pointing to a potentially faulty coolant sensor. Can anyone tell me where to find this sensor and if they have proved troublesome in general.
 
the temp sensor is on the bottom of the rad i think, sur ei saw it when i was messing around under their. will have a look later as the car in back to pieces again :| :| :| :| :|
 
Had it changed,its under the inlet manifold,no change in problem probably 02 sensors (again)
 
Is there any way of getting coolant temp reading on the dash somewhere? Really weird its invisable in cases like this!
 
I think you can access it through the hidden menus in the OEM sat nav.
I have a digital display in the driver's side air vent that shows OBD-sourced coolant temps, intake temps, boost, ignition timing, battery voltage, throttle position, rpm (with shift light), 0-100 times or road speed. I use it on track days as a means of monitoring coolant temps as my car runs hot under extreme duress in the summer. I'll find a link to the device if I can.

Would have been useful of him to take a pic of the fault codes rather than just delete them!
Are you sure it's not the laptop/software mis-reading? Seen that before.
If you've changed the sensor and it's still around -39c that's just wierd. I would get a 2nd opinion....any management lights on?
Don't see it's got anything to do with o2 sensors though before you go spending on that!
 
Intravee will show coolant temp, so its available from the OBD port. You could also use DashCommand linked to your iPhone (or Android and equivalent app) and a wireless OBD port dongle.
 
What I meant was the poor running sorry,alltemp fault codes cleared according to the mechanic whose got the diagnostic software,not got stanav or intravee either.

As agree totally stupid not to engine and coolant temps on dash
Only oil?
As you could sat in traffic over heating and no clue your engine is melting!

Not quite, as an amber water temp light comes on at about 110°c, and then a red one at about 115°c.

I've had both, but I cured it by spending over £1000 replacing the whole cooling system (including a cheap oil cooler courtesy of Beedub).

Mine now sits at about 95°c in all but track conditions, where it gets to about 100°c.

You can display on the sat nav monitor if you have the intravee, otherwise you can access through the hidden/secret menu options.
Have you tried this link? It details the test menu and options available on the E85 on page 15 onwards.

Can you leave the eng temp on dash then?
As intra is cool but I already have a audiovox media bridge fitted to mine
Utterly easy to do:)
 
Don't believe you can see it as norm without coding it - mac27040 would be able to advise you on that, I'm not an expert on the coding. However, you can get a wireless dongle - i use a VGate, similar to this one and link it to my iPad/iPhone, using the DashCommand application. You can then select your own dials to use, including coolant. There are android equivalent apps also.

Another option would be sk93's SkiPi project (thread here)?
