Just had my new MOT done on a 20i Msport Auto..even allowing for my 28i brakes, the US brochure for 2012 says it weighs 1480kg empty..

On the MOT scales it weighed 1,634 kgs with a 75 kg operator, a 10kg ish spare wheel in the boot and around 3/4 full of fuel around 23kg..

So that makes my car weigh 'empty' around 45 kgs more than the official empty weight? Around 1,525kgs..

I know I have a usb charger and some small change in there but...

Any others had their's weighed?

“A pint of water weighs a pound & a quarter”, i reckon your 3/4 full fuel tank weighs a lot more than 23kg?

When they say empty????? no oil. no fuel, probably even left the passenger seat out,,, and doesn't the brochure say ex miles to the gallon,,,,,, that can only be obtained going down hill with the engine off

3/4 of 12 gallons is about 9 gallons..that’s around 38 litres

Specific gravity of petrol is about 0.7 so that’s 38 x 0.7 = 27 kgs..

Tank is about 5/8 full so close enough for government work....so it’s not the fuel load that’s causing the issue..

Quite so...we always had the same issues with our aircraft, the brochure said x, the plane weighed x plus quite a bit...with a hard stop on max take off weight that was a real pisser...don’t think VOSA will be pulling the Z4’s into the weighbridge..thank goodness.. :driving:

Never let the facts get in the way of a good theory..

What about weight difference of all the bits you have changed ? Brakes and wheels may weigh more, not sure if the shocks also weigh more ? And the spoiler and diffuser ? Reading that though, surely couldn’t add up to 45kgs... unless as said, the BMW weight is ‘dry’. 6 litres of oil, plus gearbox and diff, power steering liquid, coolant, washer water etc.

Interesting point though, do they just add up the weight of the parts or weigh a fully built car ?

Well 17” wheels are lighter than 18” or especially 19”...

Yes the rear spoiler adds 2-3 kgs..the diffuser neglible amount, the Bilstein shocks are chunkier for sure and the ARB ditto...but surely not that much...it is what it is..just curious.. :tumbleweed:

I guess it all depends on whether the 1525kg is a dry weight or a kerb weight. Quite often manufacturers quote the dry weight; it makes their product look better against their competition.

And what options have been included. Probably none to keep as low as possible.

Have you got heated seats, electric seats and the I drive system? I suspect the two of those will add some weight compared to bmw’s standard weight..

Hi yes heated seats, folding mirrors, I drive, bmw professional speakers, oil, coolant, h&r arb, bilstein b8 shocks, rear spoiler, wind deflector..

Interested to see what a fully loaded 35is weighs on the same basis..

You mentioned weight difference between 17-18-19 rims, as most 19” I’ve owned, except my 19” CSL’s weigh a hell of a lot more than 18” ers

I've heard that 19" are much heavier than 18s that are a little heavie than 17s all things being equal..

Mine are 17" Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 which shouldn't be the heaviest boys in town..
