How firm is your clutch?

I'm sure my clutch has softened up quite a bit, or maybe I'm just getting used to it... I am conscious not to use it too much (ie. put it into neutral at red lights rather than hold it) to save wear, but am I being over fussy?

Has anyone actually had their clutch go and had to replace it?

mine went at 35k - luckily just before the warranty ran out :o

Ive no idea how hard the previous owners were on it though :?

so no you are not being fussy - take care of it

holding the clutch down in gear won't wear will it ? only wear is at actual bite point.

I'm scared to death of mine going, I've not been gentle with it.

Comming from a long history of driving heavy clutched American V8s, I have always felt that the Z4 clutch was way too soft with virtually no feel or feedback.

Z4M clutch is heavy ish compared to run of the mill cars, when i had my mk1 Focus RS and coming from a Leon Cupra R it felt really heavy (heavier than the M)....to the point of giving me calf ache!!

But i agree feel could be better, i assume most of that is down to the CDV? A CDV delete might be required, would love to know how different it feels.

CDV is like having stabilisers on your bike when you don't need them - its for those who can't learn how to handle it in my opinion. For the first 2 months I was getting used to the very sensitive clutch in the M and couldn't change gear perfectly smootly 70% of the time. Now with practice, I can change up and down fastly and smoothly and really "grab it by the scruff of the neck" so to speak.. but its good to hear that there is most likely nothing out of the ordinary with the softness of the clutch.

I was afraid of getting the M because of claims of a heavy clutch. But after doing many miles in traffic I have to say that the Z4 M clutch is not much heavier than a normal car. Sure, it is not the best feeling when in a traffic jam, but did not feel as overly heavy to me in daily rush hour traffic.

Whilst I wasn't worried about the clutch, I don't find it as heavy as I'd been told I would. Would echo the traffic jam comment though, Bank Holiday traffic on the M3 was an experience. I guess that they're (traffic jams) not it's preffered habitat...

I think the Z4M clutch is unnecessarily heavily sprung. Totally used to it now and you accept it, but if you drive something else you notice immediately. I drove a 997 C2S the other day and it was far lighter...having said that I wouldn't call it Ironman / impossible-to-use heavy.
