How fast?

Flatout, thanks for the information
I use mine for track days etc too, but I also want to be able to use it for roadtrips.
I don't think tramlining would bother me much, and I'm not too worried about increases in tyre wear, as long as it isn't astronomic - I eat through rears as it is. Swapping left for right midway through their usable life is a good idea as I don't suppose a larger mass of rubber would be shed per wheel revolution (once the tyres have worn in). More that preferentially loading the inside edges in a straight line would lead to uneven wear, shortening their life that way. As you say, that would be cured by swapping. Of course, that is only possible with non-directional tyres.
I'm not sure I can justify the expense (and insurance increase) of camber plates, but dialling in the max camber possible with the OEM set up is something I'll definitely think about. I'll give Simpson a call...
Cheers again :driving:

Hi bmwzc

I currently run -2.7 camber on the stock suspension..... Why?? Well as my stock units have only 10k miles i wanted to go as aggressive as possible with the stockers until i had some wear out of them.... i felt that i really need to understand how the stock car handles so i can really be effective in tuning my new setup which is about a special as you can get for this car!!! ive also gone to extreme lengths to reinforce the chassis..

I can report with regular hard use inside wear is literally minimal, but no more sholder wear on the outside edge..... With this much camber you may need a spacer as the top edge of the tyre gets close to the strut, i run 12mm spacer already luckily...

Tramlining is a problem on motorways..... This things follows all the rutts and bumps, its made a huge difference to my handling of the car however, its handles very well imo.... Simpson also did my setup... put it this way on stock units with a "very aggressive setup" im running top of the class @ the curborough members sprints, substantially quicker than the audi r8 that attends, you really love what your stock units can do with some proper dialing in from simpson......

in the Z4MC - 165mph in 6th on the speedo, limiter kicking in
in the 928 race car - 300kmh - rev limited in 5th
in the E61 M5 - 172mph on the HUD in 7th - limiter kicked in, but it was impressive the way it headbutted it, fully ladden and 3 up being chased by a CLS 55 AMG in Germany
in 928 S2 - 170mph on the speedo
in the 540iAT - 165mph on the speedo, got there really effortlessly. I was bored...

The Z4MC is the worst car from the above to drive at speed by far. There is a marked difference at 120+ in the way the car skips and hops over but the smoothest of surfaces. The 928 easily the best - it just gets lower and more stuck on the road as your speed gets higher. The E61 M5 easily the most impressive - the way it just piles on speed from 100mph onwards is epic for any car, let alone a family bus...

Interesting. I've seen 160+ on my speedo a few times where the law allowed and my car felt very very safe and planted. That said it was on smooth asphalt. I tend to agree that on any kind of pothole it does "bounce" a bit though.

Try this on a British...errr... track :)

Z4M suffers with the rear toeing in (- angle) when the suspension is loaded and this is why it tends to wander at high speeds

Due to the crap aero and the way it feels at 140+ I reckoned 165 mph max (actual GPS speed, not speedometer speed). So I'm impressed to see someone has managed 168 on the GPS in a roadster -- must mean that 170 is achievable in a coupe.

Mine pulls like a train through 150 and then starts to get a little light and therefore scary. My e46 m3 felt solid at a similar speed.

I reckon it would see 175 indicated.

Don't forget that the 3.6 only had the about same torque as the s54 - 266lb/ft vs 269lb/ft, but didn't weigh much more than a Z4MC. but it also weighed a good 100kg more than the 3.6. Still miss them now - but I know how much they cost if you use them regularly.

Weight has no effect on top speed unless your driving up hill

Drag vs Power and Torque are the numbers to look at

160 in the Z4MC is pretty easy

As I said above the Z4MC is capable of at least 171MPH otherwise BMW wouldn't be able to offer an M-Drivers package at 1,500€ or whatever it was to raise the limiter to that level.

I am led to believe that it is quite possible for an individual in a 330Ci at max chat to be overtaken with ease by an enthusiastically driven individual in a Z4M . In fact if both cars started at the same time by chance the result would be in favour of the Mowner. Actuallly I'm not guessing! The 330Ci is quick, almost like an M3 but it can't stop and start like a Z4M.

Sorry I'm on a roll. If you want to beat it in a porsche then you need a turbo. N/A you need big clumsy displacement and the lumbering sluggish lovely noise that brings For the 3.2L there's nothing mainstream to touch it (especially for 2006). There's a reason this engine won so many prizes -it's amazing! Even compared to the latest engines that have resorted to Turbo/Super Chargers because of emission regs there isn't really anything this high end, or close to what's going on with race cars. For me it's all about that beautifully balanced straight 6 and the 7900rpm screamer of a top end.-heaven!

Pretty much as fast as an Audi R8, as I found out today. You never know how hard the other guy is trying and he was two up. But I was using every thing that straight six could muster, so I suspect he was doing the same. Any how it was a very even contest, the Audi did pull away a little, but we are talkin a cars lenth over several hundred yards. Very nice looking car from the back, you don't see many down here in sunny Cornwall. Made me smile. :D

I've seen an indicated 260 on mine. I've also had a few goes with a mate with a CSL, predictably he walked all over me, we're talking 3-4 car lengths until 230-240.

My Kawasaki ZX-9 C2 hit 175mph down RAF Valley Runway. At 150mph I hit a raised section where the two runways intersect, front wheel came up off the ground and gave a little shake which scared the living daylights outta me. But I still did half a dozen more runs and eventually hit 175 mph.
Eventually sold it and bought an unfaired bike which is uncomfortable above 100mph - too scary having a machine that feels slow when you are doing anything under 130mph.

Never managed to get the Zed above 130 - always ran out of room or bottle.

I managed to keep a car length behind an rs4 from 20 to 110 a couple of times off a few roundabouts in series. He was about a car length infront of me when he booted it and I did same, an thats how we stayed, seemed to be dead even although can never tell how hard other guy is trying!?

(and I didn't have sport button pressed as he caught me by surprise)

Overall I was pretty chuffed

I found the same on an empty M4 a couple of years ago. There was nothing in it at all. With him in front I could keep up, and when he let me past I couldn't lose him. I was pretty surprised too.

He must have been in the wrong gear or some problem with car. The Z4mc will pull a couple of car lengths over the 3.0l from 20-110, so im sure the rs4 would too as its on par or slightly quicker than Z4m
