Hi all, still looking fora zed,the thing is they are as rare as hens teeth for sale around here, the thing is if i travel too far to pick it up then have problems with it further down the line im a bit snookered.Would you risk it? Ive got a 3 series to part ex so i cant really go for the ones on here for sale unless i sell mine first-any thoughts or experiences appreciated, thanx :)

I flew from Bristol to Newcastle, bought the car and drove it 300 miles home with no problems and saved about 2 grand on prices at that time :)

i travelled saddleworth to southampton, 5 hours ish each way, a differnt car though

the right car is worth it

I went from Penzance Cornwall to Glasgow once for a 330ci M Sport, I did have a buyer once from Southern Ireland who went by ferry to Scotland , flew to Exeter airport then meat me in Plymouth to drive back to Liverpool and catch the ferry back to Ireland!!!! all that way for a Honda Accord Type R! I was well impressed and also pretty confident he would buy it!! :P

Ha, I did the same but in reverse: Dunfermline (north of Edinburgh) to Torquay to buy a Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI - v rare. 900mile+ round trip completed in <20hrs including buying the car...

Worth travelling for the right car at the right price IMO.

I drove to Essex a few weeks back 5 hour round trip from the midlands and it was a waste of time. I'd only travel like that if it was very rare or a bargain.

Went to see a black one at nottinhham last week, the one I've settled on is from
Derby

When i bought mine (2007),i flew down to england,to view the buy my z from Surrey, and drove it back up (qt a lenghty drive up to west of scotland) :driving: :D

For a car like a Z4 i would go as far as neccessary to get the right one. Just get as much info as you can before you go so you have all but bought it. For a normal car i wouldnt want to go as far. Currently trying to find the gf a runaround for 2-3k, by the time you have driven hundreds of miles back and forth looking then you may aswell have just compromised and bought something local.

I drove 9 hours each way with a buddy to pick up my Zed. It turned out to be a memorable roadtrip. Also, Don't kid yourself; if you know you want option X on your Zed, then don't settle for something less. You'll always kick yourself later. And I'm not talking about holding out for a car with cupholders vs. one without- I'm talking about the big options (xenon, paint color, sat nav, etc.). There are too many Zeds out there with differing specs- you are bound to find 3 at any given time that meet your requirements, if you are willing to travel a distance to get it. Can you repaint the car, chop up the dash to add sat nav, etc.? Of course, but why not be patient and get what you want from the start. Just my $0.02.

very true - my must have was piano, would not even look if it wasn't - oh and HAD TO BE A COUPE HEHE

Yep - travel anywhere, but ensure you get the FULL spec up front together with FULL pics.
If your buying a roadster the seller should be more than happy to do this considering the time of year to sell

If buying private what would happen if you went to pick up the car 500 miles away and when you got there the car had already been sold/ not as described? you'd already be out of pocket for travel.

I traveled from London to Guiseley (nr Leeds) to pick up mine from an independent... all i saw were pictures.... and ony ever test drove one 2.5i Z... which was local too me; again that was 3/4 months earlier.... So i was a little worried that the car may not be as described.. and my insurance was up 2 days after i was meant to pick it up.. so if the car was a dud then i would have to renew my insurance on my old car.

Went from Exeter to South Wales, first to view the car, then got the guy to put a years MOT on it and went up to collect it 4 days later. We agreed to meet half way on both occassions. He had bought it privatly from someone in Hull and had driven up six months earlier to get it. It needed two new rear tyres, we eventually agreed to go halves on them. He was a bit shocked when we said how much they were........

I drove 5 hours twice to get mine..

The first time he i got half way and he said he couldnt find the V5, which made me think he was a scammer, but phoned the dealer to check on the car as it had just been in and turned out they still had the v5 by accident.

the car just had inspection 2 and 4 new tyres, 2 new alloys etc, few grand bill.

I drove up the second time and brought the car, i was on a test drive and said id take it for XXXX cash, he said ok, I said shall we drive back to yours then to count the cash etc, he said no don't bother my wife has been following us i can get a lift back with her!!

ha

I was in Manchester for a day out and ended up in Chester and bought mine on the spur of the moment 160 miles from home.

No problems at all and the only problem I've had has been sorted under warranty locally as it was an approved used car.

If you buy from a non-franchise dealer then you have relatively little comeback anyway so I wouldn't worry, most of them use third party warranties that will let you claim anywhere and if they don't offer a warranty then just buy one yourself.

I'd travel up to 300 miles for the right car and have flown before to pick them up.
