Like I said they give you a 1000 miles each way of the due mileage. This is to allow you to get your car in for a service and also to allow the dealer time to fit you in!

Unless you have maintenance/service inclusive (not on the z4 i know) but my 320cd had it and the dealer took some serious persuading to do the rear pads when the light wasnt due on for another 2k, and the cars was going back in in a few days. Luckily I'm friendly with one of the supervisors who told he service guy the light would be on next time I bought the car in.
With all these things I think it comes down to your relationship with the dealer, luckily mines pretty good, but you need to speak to the right person.
