How does the oil sensor work?

Mine was showing 2 out of 5 segments so I added 1 litre and it now shows 5 out of 5 segments - is this normal? I would expect a greater range from full to empty?

I think it is displaying the safe operational range rather than completely full to empty. i.e. minimum fill to maximum.

This .... When it gets to the bottom of the gauge it tells you to add 1 litre of oil.

You may have a litle too much now. As Tom said you are meant to wait until prompted by the yellow light and then add 1 litre.
