what do we think?

I'm not trying to be condescending but to me it sounds like an older engine. Just a bit tappety.

Fairly common problem on the m54 engine. The internet is your friend hear there is a wealth of information on the subject.

Have a read through this. It sounds to me like your Hydraulic lifters to me. Has it only happened since it's been cold? When was the oil last changed? What oil is in there? Lots of scenarios and i am not a mechanic so i wouldn't want to say what you should do.

But have a read and make your own mind up. Knowledge is power and all that.

Not sure about it occurring when cold/hot tbh, just had a listen the other day. There's 5w30 in there and it's been in there for around 10k I guess but had a few top ups.

oil degrades over time/mileage & can contribute towards tappy lifters, changing it often helps as do longer runs and less short journeys.
I wouldnt leave my engine oil for 10k miles but maybe im just fussy
regards

Don't know that it's a problem. I thought that it's just how the engine is. Service is due soon and will use thicker oil based on the above advice I think

It's the Don't know bit that eats away at your mind :-( but i hope it's nothing to worry too much about!

Oil spec advise seems to vary, i am not sure what mine has at the moment but i was looking to flush and replace with Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W-30.

Was told earlier in the thread to up it to 10w60 to help the engine

I wouldn't use that oil, it's for the M cars & the wrong viscosity for the m54-just use what it says in the handbook
Regards

Ok thanks. Should I be changing to oil more often. I am not a fan of going off the official service course so bit hesitant.
