Hi all-yeah i know-you turn the key, but does anyone press on the clutch pedal at the same time?-i was told to do this on my e46-thanks

my golf will not start unless the clutch is depressed

its good practise cos i always leave a car in gear

my zed is auto

always have and always will start any car with the clutch depressed.

Guards against false neutrals etc and eases strain on the clutch/engine when starting. Can't hurt can it :D

I imagine this is an old fashioned technique to starting cars, like something my parents would do, including pumping the loud pedal too...

I'm a clutch dipper, it saves the footman's back when he cranks the starting handle :)

Most cars now require the clutch to be depressed to enable the starter. My old Landcruiser didn't... That's another story

And I press the start button in my Z4.

Would never dream of starting a car without depressing the clutch. Zed's an auto so no issue.

Does it actually do anything? Would be good to know.

When I get in the car, I always depress the clutch and twaddle the stick to make sure the car is out of gear. I then put both feet off the pedals to switch it on.

I presume everyone is meaning to keep clutch pushed in when the key is turned?

dip the clutch here too, was told its less strain on the car, less demanding of the battery. dunno if its true any more but makes me feel like im being nice to the car so in turn the car will be nice to me :D

I do it for 2 reasons being that it gives the starter motor less mass to spin over and thus easier on a cold day, weak battery, thick oil, etc. not that it matters much, just caring for mechanical things but secondly it's all too easy to think it's in neutral, turn the starter and lurch forward.

Only time I don't do it is on failed hill start in the Jeep where you start in gear, but that's another story
