How do you power yours?

Do the two cigarette ports on an e89 provide continuous power or do they switch off after a set period? I have a dashcam and not sure if it's got 'parking mode' so wondering if there is a better method of supplying power?

The cigarette ports switch off with the car.

Hi Rob. So they'll switch off even if the dashcam is drawing power?

As far as i know, yes. The e85 sockets remain live after ignition off but the e89 cars are different.

Yep Rob is right, when I first wired my dashcam I connected it to the fuse that operates the cigar lighter socket under the armrest but after 30 mins or so it switches off and turned the dashcam off with it. Figured it out eventually and connected it to a different fuse (can't now remember which).

The cigarette sockets definitely power down, I even had trouble finding a power supply in the fuse box and in the end ran a permanent live straight from the battery in the boot

I played around with the fuse box and connected the passive power to the interior lighting fuse, and then the active power to the cigarette lighter. This allows my dashcam to go into parking mode when the car is turned off (with a voltage protector).

I tried that with mine (fuse 77, I think) but found that it still powered down after about 30 minutes, perhaps I’d got the fuse numbers mixed up, it wouldn’t surprise me, I ended up putting one fuse back in the wrong position and then my I drive controller wouldn’t work :headbang: anyway sorted now :D
