how do the auto wipers work?

i have auto headlights and the rain sensor in the middle of the windscreen, but i've never been able to get the auto wipers to work.

this is my wiper stalk:

if i push it up one, you control the speed using the wheel embedded in the stalk.
if i push it up twice, it's a constant slow wipe.
if i push it up again, it's a constant fast wipe.
if i push it down, it gives a one time wipe.

am i doing something wrong? been bugging me since i bought the car as i didn't realise i had them at first.

The one push up position is the auto setting, just leave it there to do it's thang! Albeit you do have to 'wake it up' everytime you start the car up, it does work though!

Move it to position one andleave it as woody said. I wonder if the rain sensor on the windscreen is actually working, but am not sure how to test it though.

Stand on bonnet. Pee on windscreen. If you get covered in it you know they have kicked in and thrown it back over you. If it just runs off then its not working

As said, you do need to wake it up every time you start the car - leave in position 1 then just flick the dial up and down a setting. The thumb dial actually controls the sensitivity, not the speed... Though I guess one leads to the other

when they are active the brake drying function kicks in too

Thought I test mine and yes plenty of kick back so its working okay... :( :(

this seems like far too much of a technological innovation for my stone age brain to comprehend

so when i get in the car and start it up, if i flick the stalk up once then back down to it's default setting then it should automatically wipe the screen when water is poured over the sensor?

i hope i've got that correct

edit: the windscreen fitter man (not gavin) has just tested them and they are working fine. so it seems i'm just a technphobe

if there 5 states, you want the #3 in the below list. From the highest stalk position to the lowest:
1. Fast wipe (top most stalk position
2. Normal wipe
3. Variable wipe (controlled by the rocker) / AUTO
4. Off
5. One wipe - returns stalk to 4 state when selected

Leave it in #3, but when you head out on an overcast / potentially-rainy drive you should move the stalk from 3 > 4 > 3, to reactivate the auto-rain sensing mode of the Variable wipe / Auto mode.

Glad you got them checked and they are working :D

How did the windcreen fitter man test them, did he pee on the sensor by any chance

i've got them and i hate them with a vengeance :headbang: wish i had just normal intermittent wipers
