How do I reset the paddle shifts?

According to the previous owner of my car, the paddle shifts need resetting. At the moment sometimes instead of downshifting they upshift. He told me I could google and find out how to reset them myself but I haven't had any luck with google. Anyone know how I could do this?

I guess you have the SMG installed; I'm not familiar with it, but I found this on another forum: "at speed over 20mph, put gear selector in N , pull both paddles and hold for 5 sec, put gear selector back in gear and drive away".
It also should state how to in the owner's manual.

i didnt know that the smg paddles needed to be reset. can anyone else please elaborate????????

:? News to me as well, anyone have any futher info on this, and what its got to do with the SMG?

I've never had a mis-shift, not once. I also don't have the original manual, being I'm the second owner.

I just downloaded a PDF of the 2005 Owners Manual, and read it in its entirety. 0 mention of this. Curious.

It could be one of the adaptation value: apparently the car "learn" several things based on the driver. Even the automatic transmission"adapt" based on the driver... There's a way to reset this memory...
But I'm not sure about it: i'm just speculating since I've been reading several posts about this software called Carsoft that lets you do several diagnosis on BMW and also reset the adaptation values... What they are, I'm not sure, but I know they exist...

well i was having issue where if i tried to downshift using the paddles it would sometimes upshift instead and sometimes the other way around. wasnt very reliable so reseting the paddles was the way to fix it.

ZetaTre - you're right about resetting the car so that it can learn the driver's driving habits.. i just didnt know how it was done on the smg
