How do i know tappets need checking?

I have a 56 m in interlagos blue bought last xmas with 21k on it, lately i have noticed a slight rattling and clicking which i assume is the injectors working,the rattling only happens at 4k revs but is getting me paranoid because with the sound of the stock exhaust it gets drowned out,also when i leave the car over the weekend and then reverse off the drive there is an almighty clunk when moving off,i know the brakes may be rusted on but i had a WRX sti before this and it never did this to the extent the M does,another problem i have is when turning off the engine when the car is in neutral there is a worrying rattle while it stops but when in gear with the clutch in it doesn`t, some help would be appreciated cheers!!

ps it is used approved, and any other things i should get looked at for an M with this mileage do tell :D
 
tappets do rattle around 3-4000 rpm especially when you lift off the gas. The engine should be quiet when warm on tickover. The odd clunk in reverse seems normal as well and the handbrake can stick especially if there's a bit of rust on the discs. Don't know about a rattle when turning off the engine though. Not had that happen.
