How come my fan came on?

Hi all-as above,i wasnt stuck in traffic,but when i reversed into my garage ,the fan came on?-needle straight in the middle.

The fan came on because it keeps that needle right in the middle. Its how it works. Your sensors saw the need for more airflow and provided it.

air conditioning compressor came on I suspect, also activates the radiator fan

Often happens when you stop a car as the heat soaks out of the engine and once stopped moving there is no air movement through the rad, so the fan cuts in, in an instant.

One of the reasons that if you take a spirited drive you should cool it down over the last mile or two.

Cheers for the replies guys,i understand the idea, im just surprised it came on with me not standing in traffic-my e46 never did,but i did have the air con on.
