How brown is your oil?

Just dipping my stick and pondering the colour my oil is.

My car was Insp2'd about 4000 miles ago at BMW, but when wiping the dipstick on a white paper towel the colour is a nice deep browny colour... maybe a shade deeper

Is this normal for a 60k engine with oil done about 4k ago? Previous petrol cars seem to have run it a bit clearer (my Peugeot GTi6 with pink Fuchs Pro S was almost clear still at 3000 miles)

Maybe it's just the nature of the BMW long-life oil that it's not quite as clear/pink as my Fuchs Pro S was from the start... is it a light golden brown shade when it goes in?

Hmmmm :?

It's the colour of golden syrup when it goes in.

Personally I preferred the reddy/purple of the Silkolene Pro S/R I used to use in the M5.

After 14K kms the oil is that brown. I topped it off with the Castrol TWS Motorsports and it is that shade of brown out of the bottle. :|

Hmmm, sounds fairly normal then. Brown in, slightly more opaque brown out!

As Mmm-five mentions, alot of modern fully-synths now are fairly funkily coloured when new, and then 'dirt up' as they age, but it sounds like the BMW stuff is fairly dirty looking to start with :)

Oil change in 4k as part of my aftermarket warranty though, so might put in some Fuchs Pro S as it was pretty good in my last petrol car! Will be interesting to see how quickly it dirties up...
