How accurate is engine power reading from OBDii?

Hi All

So I use BimmerLink's dashboard to keep an eye on some "gauges" (boost, oil pressure, water pump rpm, battery voltage etc.) and spotted the engine power option. I know the wife's 120d also shows it on her iDrive, but is this actual calculated power (like do they actually run calculations) or is it simply a preconfigured sliding scale (so much throttle, so much rpm should equate to 50% power which in you case is 70Kw)?

Thanks,
R

The power figure is calculated by the app using the calculated torque figure that is generated by the DME multiplied by RPM which it knows.

The calculated torque figure as it states is calculated based on fuel burn models…so it’s an approximation..

So meaning if you're mapping has been altered that it will be guessing the wrong figures, correct?

It could be wrong for many reasons..most cack tuners over richen the mixture ..that will lead to erroneous high torque figures..

But generally if it’s burning more fuel it will show more peak torque figures

A dyno calibrated pre and post tune is the only realistic way to measure power with any degree of accuracy…
