There is currently a campaign underway in Germany concerning vehicles fitted with the N52 engine. The 2x4 VANOS screws will be replaced by new ones. As there is no online translation, here are the translated texts. You need to enter the full chassis number and you will then see a result.

Recall actions relate to the safety or compliance with legal regulations of your vehicle. These actions are free of charge for you. If you have specific questions, please contact your BMW partner.
The safety of our customers and our products is very important to us. For this reason, the BMW Group carries out quality controls on an ongoing basis. You can check below using the 17-digit chassis number whether a recall is currently open for your vehicle.

So what is the problem.
I know my colleagues car years ago got called back on vanos bolts.
Yes. And many weren't.
Now the rest of it is affected (AFAIK the 2010 & 2011 models) and the 2x4 VANOS screws will be replaced by new ones.

Mine got it replaced as of today.

Mine's a 2009 car the VIN checker on the link you've given shows no recall found. I assume this works well on all cars regardless of which country the car was originally registered in?

Are they also doing this in the states?
Since there are already positive cases in France, I assume that it will be independent of the region and the country.

After all, we are talking about engines that were all built in Germany

And these VANOS units were installed in different engines, N51, N52, N55, which should also be checked by their VINS.

Thanks for posting that Robbi.

I used the link and Google Translator did a great job. Until I entered my VIN and it didn't translate the response!

My 330i is a really early N52 as it was built in September 2005 - do you know if there was a start date for the recall?

Failing that can you tell me what this is in English? "Ihr Fahrzeug hat derzeit keine offenen Rückrufe oder Service Aktionen. Wenn Sie einen regulären Servicetermin buchen möchten, nutzen Sie bitte unsere".

Many thanks.

Well, we assume that only 2010/2011 engines seem to be affected. But that is currently not ensured.

The result of the VIN check can be seen in my 2nd commented picture above.
Green is nothing to do. :?

My 2006 530i touring isn't affected as well.

I've read that recall letters will start going out on December 13th. in the USA. Obviously they have to replace the valve cover gasket, but will they also replace the valve cover? Here in the states, if the dealer replaces the gasket, they will also replace the valve cover.

Gasket, aluminium bolts of the cover as well as the 2x4 bolts of the VANOS are required to replace. Replacing the cover itself is nonsense.

But, as this "improvement" is completey free (AFAIK in Europe), they may do what they want as far as they don't charge you for anything else.

I didn't get any recall letter for my car, so don't wait for it!
At first check your VIN's on the German website linked above. Many of the dealers don't have any information about this topic.
Green is OK - Grey requires activity from you!

As a matter of note..a well known BMW Indy here in the UK had one of these VANOS bolts backing out as described! As posted on his FB account.

Thanks Robbi  Just checked mine and it looks like mine is to be done, so will contact one of my "local" dealers to see. When I say "local" both are 30 miles away :headbang:

OK, quick update.......

If you go to BMW's UK recall check site it states that there are no recalls on my car!! So no joined up thinking here then :headbang:

Never mind. Just make an appointment with a German dealer and get it fixed. Of course, one extra mile.

Interestingly Frech N52's are affected as well and they were accepted by the dealers.

My colleagues car i think was 2011 23i. She had recall letter like, blimey, 10 years ago, time flies. At the time i checked my car, 2009, wasn't affected.
Looks like someone might not of set the torque wrench to the right value or some soft bolts.

AFAIK, there was an initial N52 VANOS recall around 2013 also in Germany. Now the rest of these engines will be upgraded.

I am worried about these Vanos bolts. Rang dealership they said no recall logged yet strikes me the loosening bolts are a real problem. What can we do in UK?
Don’t want to touch it until get a direction from BMW?

Reminds me someone telling me how BMW scrapped 10k Mini engines. Something to do with switching off machines on a Friday and restarting Monday with machines going out of tolerance making parts.
