Horrific noise

I have always believed that the loudest noises turn out to be the easiest to fix.
Driving home today it started making this awful noise. Thought I had broken an exhaust clamp but it was more than a knocking noise. Wheel speed related not engine. Seemed to be coming from front driver side.
You're probably ahead of me here but I don't know the name of the broken part. And I am intrigued to know what it actually does?
Jacked up front. Spinning the wheel revealed all. The " plate "that sits behind the disc has broken its mounting bracket and was wobbling around scraping against the disc.
Just ordered the part from dealer £39. But they couldn't give me a name for it. Just "plate"
Is this common or have I got a first
Presumably the disc has to come off to replace?

I believe it is quite common. Certainly seen it here before. It's just a dust shield I believe. I seem to recall others repairing by welding them back on. Not sure how you fit a new one.

Just replaced one of mine. I replaced the bearings whilst I was the as rusted good n proper! Brakes, disc and hub all have to come out to replace the shield.

I'm ok with removing the calliper and disc. But how does the hub come off? Does it need a hub puller?

46mm socket, breaker bar and hub puller needed. There's a good video on YouTube

On the you tube vid I watched, of course he didn't need a puller. It just fell off for him. As did the disc. (And he didn't need to swear) I guarantee it won't be like that for me.
So I think this is similar to the older 3 series E46.
Will a standard 3 leg puller be man enough do you think?
What did you use to drive the new bearing/hub onto the axle?

i just used tin snips to remove the rest of the shield and left it off, sod taking the hub off for something that isnt strictly nesescary

3 leg puller is all I used. Getting the new hub on took patience as such a close fit; lots of wiggling and eventually once all lined up just slid straight on.

Just to close the thread.
46 mm socket arrived today so I settled down to change the disc heat shield.
Took wheel off
Took complete calliper off
Removed disc
Then the problem is really clear. The 3 mounting holes in the heat shield that locate onto the lower suspension leg leave very little wall thickness to the outer edge of the heat shield. One big pot hole and it can break.
But instead of replacing it I strengened the mounting points with some big washers.
You need to use some longer 6 mm bolts though as the original bolts are so short.
Use 3 x 6mm bolts about 15mm long.
And to really make my weekend, BMW will send the new part back.
