Horrible misfires..?

Today lunch gifted my beloved Zed with some horrible misfires, just after a fault code checking my automatic wiper function.
Could standing still with "ignition on" extended period of time cause this?

And, is it the dreaded coilpacks that packed in?

If so, do I just check them with an Ohm meter? I have some extra coilpacks lying around.
 
you cant check coil packs with an ohm meter. usually they malfunction when they get hotter.
Best way to check if its one of the coilpacks, is that first of all the misfire is present on a fixed cylinder (maybe more if you have more than 1 failing coilpacks), and then swapping the coils over to another cylinder and check if the misfire is swapping to that cylinder.
 
Ouch, not too promising then. This happened when semi-cool and is thru the revrange consistently.

Started, normal tick-over, reversed out of the garage. Put in 1st gear to pull away - that's when it happened. Really rough idling as if some or more plugs are not working at all. After 20meter I got the engine lamp on.
Managed to drive home but thats it.
 
As above. I believe the Zed has 6 independent pencil coil packs. So you can switch then around to find a coil pack fault. Just be sure you don't switch the leads around. I've not done it on a Zed. Hope fully they are marked up. Again as above coil problems are usually first noticed when hot. Misfires from cold could be a fuelling issue.
 
The fault is the consistent now, cold or hot.

Very lumpy idling.

Doesn't seem like a fuel issue either.. more mechanical maybe. No knocking sounds tho.

Indeed - coilpack it was.. Cyl 5.

I had a feeling but a forum like this is still invaluable in the collective wisdom.. Thanx! :)
 
Maybe drive around with an extra ignition coil.
They age because they are in a hot spot and slowly the laquer around the coil wire is burnt and eventually it will short somewhere in the coil.
If one goes, chance is that more will go (as they all age).
Usually its best to change them all (they are obviously cheaper on ebay than at the dealer ;))
