Horrendous metallic screaching noise

Only 18 months old and I was out last night far from home and when I got to the town I was going to there was a horrendous extremely loud screaching noise from the nearside. Very difficult to tell if it was front or rear or if it was wheel related or not. But it was so loud and off putting that pedestrians were turning to see what was coming along the road. This was at 20-30 MPH.

I stopped the car and looked around and could see nothing.
Tyres all good and attached to the rims!
Looked underneath and could see nothing trapped that I was dragging along
Turned the front wheels and could see nothing caught
Used a torch on front and rear wheelarches and nothing

I turned the car round and tried turning the steering wheel/braking/accelerating and this most horrendous metallic noise (the kind you might expect if a bush had come off a rotating spindle and there was metal to metal contact) was still there, accompanied by what appeared to be a rotational clunk.

I very slowly drove what was probably a few miles but seemed like eternity and decided to call the RAC. Not having a safe place to stop I decided to go a few hundred yards up the road to a McDonalds where I could wait in the warm with a coffee. As I got there it got a lot better. I then, instead, drove on further at 40-50 MPH and finally it stopped. A hundred mile drive home in pouring rain was not the best when I was dreading something coming off or falling apart.

No noise at the moment and tomorrow it goes into my local dealer but what on earth could it be? :(

Hi, there is a whole load of replies on this forum from GL owners complaining that this is caused by a stone getting caught in the brake parts. Its a common thing apparently.

Wow...... Yep that is definitely it! I'll see what the dealer says tomorrow as I want them to check for damage to the disk (or anything else). It'll be interesting to see if they say whether they have ever heard of this problem.

They have..they'll tell you they haven't though

For future reference. Stone in the discs, so back and forward movement can dislodge it.
Or you can push the guard and it can drop the stone out.

Hope no damage though and let us know.

Well it seems this is not an unknown problem at the dealer. Their view and advice was exactly the same as suggested on here. Just got to hope it doesn't happen again..... :-?

For ONCE your meme is 100% true :poke:

The jealous paupers have nowhere else to go but mock Andy.....poor lad.....

Funnily enough, I’ve only had this happen on my 35is…..I’m sure it will happen on the g29 as it’s a bmw issue.

As for the jealousy by some on here…….well that’s just ugly.

Wouldnt thank you for a G29, Supra yes but not the G29, besides I'm very much happy with my proper roof

This isn't just BMWs. When my parents road was resurfaced, this was experienced by quite a few people on the street. Hondas, Ford, BMW, Mercedes...

was quite a nice little earner taking wheels off for folk and getting chunks of rocks out of the braking systems...!

It's like a Dickensian novel on here sometimes with this 3 tier class system

The only horrendous screeching noise I get in my 35is is when she thinks I'm driving too fast :?

Will, you could argue if you can hear her screeching over the engine noise you’re not driving fast enough

I'll try telling her that next time. Z4 soon to be for sale, previous owner deceased

Mine stamps her feet as well - Autobahn, roof down, 140mph and I could still hear her!

Now I'm really pissed off. It's happened again; second time within two weeks. WTF is this all about. I'm not going to drive it around back and forth in forward and reverse trying to dislodge the stone and hope nothing gets damaged so I have called BMW assist who are coming out to sort out but I need a solution to stop this happening.

Let's see where this goes.......... :x

The good thing about the Z4 is that you can roll the roof down so you can hear people calling you a w**ker /laughing as you drive past with your screeching metallic wheels.

In all seriousness though, let us know if you get anywhere!
